Strange Tachometer Problem
Strange Tachometer Problem
My tach has stopped working properly. Yesterday, I noticed it stopped returning to 0 RPMs when you turn the car off. The tach returns to approx 800 rpms instead. The symptom seems as if the tach is off by 800 RPM's.
When you insert the key in the ignition, the tach is still at 800 RPMs.
When you start the car, the tach claims the engine is turning 1600 RPM's. However, the ear tach says there's no way its true.
When you drive the car, it sure feels like the 6pi ports open up around 4k... I havent checked where it thinks the redline is.
I tried searching tach problems, but didnt find anything useful. Does anyone have any good insight?

From an old thread and from someone who is leaps and bounds ahead of me when it comes to RX-7's.
Hope this helps.
How do you figure???
Pull the steering column surround off (4 screws), then the gauge surround (5 screws) then the cluster (4 screws). reach around the back, unplug the speedo cable, and two (three if it is a S5 automatic) plugs, and pull the cluster out.
Pretty simple.
Then either unclip, the plastic panel or unscrew (depending on series) the plastic panel. Now you have access to the tach needle. Push the needle down to the position in needs to be in when off and then re-assemble.
