Strange squeeling sound..

I have a 91 na...and this sound just started...everytime I down shift from 3rd to 2nd or from 2nd to 1st.....there is a loud squeeling (sp) sound coming from the engine bay. I took out my ps/ac belts and I still have my air pump on for my actuators b/c I chose to keep my power from the 5th/6th ports.......I checked both my alternator belt and my air pump and they are good I loosened and tightened them to see if thats what it was and nope that wasnt the answer....

My dad thinks it may be the transmission, but I really dont know. I had a new Reman put in there not more then 2 months ago and its still under warrenty so I was thinkin of taking it in...but if I could fix it myself then I wont take it in.........any clue..???

people need to read it in order to see if they know the problem or not. hence all the views and no response.
my guess? belt ( i have to tighten one today actually)
but if you checked them, it goes right out the window.
youre welcome!

There's stuff called "belt dressing," that you spray on. I've also heard that you can put soap on your belts to make them stop squeeling. The soap worked for my brother's buick.

not to steal the thread or anything, but i was tightening a squealing belt on my 626 turbo, i opened the hood and i thought "OH MY GOD IT TIGHTENS WITH A SINGLE BOLT AND ITS ON TOP OF THE ENGINE!"
something easy for a change, ya know? =P
tighten, tighten, tighten. snap! the bolt twists in half with an inch of tensioning left to spare. it never fails =)
(i swear to god, i think almost every bolt i actually have to go to autozone to replace has been grade 8 because of this kind of stuff) =P

anyway, back to thread

I'll take a shot at this one.

Is the fan clutch working?

It should freewheel when the engine is off or cold.

Even when the engine is hot & running, it should slip above ~4k RPM.

If it's locked up (or pinned) the belts can't handle the torque above 6K, & they will scream.
