Strange headlight Problem!?

Okay well here it is. My highbeams won't turn off! The turn signal switch used to turn them on/off works fine. When the headlights are off I can flash highbeams with the switch, but when I put the headlights up the highbeams stay on and I can't turn them off with the switch. Then when driving the flash and strobe like crazy.

I hate electric problems like this, but can someone direct me where to look? I have checked the inside and the dash wiring looks fine.

Mine do the exact opposite, my low beams are always on and when I try to high beam it neither one of the lights work...

I was told it was the dimmer relay and I don't doubt it but I need a new set of lights anyway so I'll be buying a new set and a dimmer relay.

Did anything get changed that caused this??? Any work done at all lately??? Even something that would appear not to be related.

It sounds like a wiring issue, but could be also a bad switch.

Dimmer relay is most likely, but could be bad bulbs, a bad highbeam/turn switch or a wiring issue.

Judging by that diagram if the relay clicks over it signals the indicator, mine signals on my dash the blue icon just no lights - guess it's just either wiring related (which is possible seing as my head lights WONT go down) or new head ligths are needed...I've switched all of the switches on my console at least two or three times each.

Yes, if the indicator displays high beam ON, then the problem is either burnt out bulbs or damaged or disconnected wire between the bulb and the relay.

The indicator working tells you that the switch and relay are working

Alright, that elimnates the relay then thank god...or not? Do you have any recommendaitons for brand new housing + bulbs? Any links? I want something I'll be able to see out of night - I've got two mismatched housings right now and it looks stupid!

-- Do you have the other side of that sheet that shows the motor causing the head lights to go up and down, while I've nailed you, I can take the switch off and the head lights wont shoot back up if I manually crank them down but as soon as I plug in the switch they shoot up and wont go down, I've tried about three different switches that come with the car so I didnt think it was them (and might be the wiring this time around) but I've also unplugged them at the actual connection and jumped the wires and made them go up and down without a problem (they stay down or up like this as well)...

this one is better:

as far as bulbs, I like the Sylvania SilverStar sealed beams if meeting DOT is important.

If DOT is not a big deal for your state (no inspections) then Hella Housings with H4 HID bulbs and Japanese or Korean transformers are my next choice, but expect to pay around $300 for a set if you go the HID route.

Nothing about my car is legal in any way...haha I just pay off the inspection guy if I need to...

Do you have any links for the HIDS?

-- Thanks, my dad needed this he's an electrician for the most part so he understands them a bit more than this, all I can guess that it's a wiring issue at this point because of what I wrote awalago?

I have a kit set on my Tacoma.. you would want the H4 Hi/LO, Not just the H4. The Hi/Lo is the only one that the High beams actually work.

The biggest advantage is that the HID kits only use around 35 watts per bulb, vs the 65 used on conventional and Halogen bulbs, so your power draw/load on the alt and battery is almost havled at night.

If there is enough intrest, I would consider running a group buy on those H4 Hi/Lo kits with bulbs, but I would need at least 10 people. It would save about 10-15% depending on how many people were willing to put cash down.

Yep S5 coupe. The high beam switch is now loose from when I took the dash apart to check the connections, With the dash off I tried the switches so I can see how it acts. And physically the switch looks fine, but when it comes to electronics I get scared and dont like to take those things apart to look inside.

No, you don't want to take it apart.

And you do know that S4 and S5 turn signal switches wire entirlly different, so if you used a S4 switch it would act messed up in a S5 car????

The next step would be to check the output of the switch. Do you have access to a multi meter???

No, all the headlight switches wire the same...

Only the turn/high beam and cruise switches wire different.
