Stock Turbo+K&N+Catback+Downpipe: Do I need FCD ?

I was just wondering: on my '92 TII the engine is stock, besides a K&N + scoop. If I go full catback, plus downpipe (but keep the main cat. converter), do I need a FCD ? Is this a precaution or a necessity ? I've heard that downpipe+catback will raise the pressure almost 2psi (from 7,5 to 9,5). If so, do I need the FCD or is just something nice to have ? Just wondering...

I am not a turbo expert, but from all of the posts like yours that I have read: Yes, you defenitely need a FCD with those mods. You probably also need to beef up the fuel system a bit. The fuel pump rewire is generally recommended.

Hey,
I am currently running downpipe, mid pipe, Apex GT cat back, and intake, and I hit Fuel Cut. I think you will too. Only think different I have is the mid pipe. I didn't buy one right away for the fact that i didn thave the money, but i need one now. I am just babying it till it arrives.

My own problem...

I'm getting a downpipe and midpipe for my car, but if there's any chance I'll hit fuel-cut I won't install the midpipe until I get an FCD. Will I hit fuel cut with just a downpipe and intake? What if I put a TID on? This is on the stock catback too...

I need help ASAP.

with a stock cat you probably won't. if it's a high flow one you might. just stick it on and try. if you hit fuel cut then buy a FCD. just make sure you have a boost gauge first. don't go over 10psi.

I agree with Scott, don't buy it yet, I doubt you will hit fuel cut with a stock main cat...I have all the main mods but went with a smaller diameter exhaust so it would keep my boost at a controlable level...I think on my year fuel cut is 8.7 psi, and I haven't hit it...But its much faster than stock was! Even if you do, once won't hurt anything, just don't keep doing it.
Good luck with your great true sports car!

Well, I'm just going to install the downpipe for now and then the midpipe after I get my FCD.

I just found out something cool though...this girl I know works at a metal-fab place as a shipper and painter. Well, she was telling me about how she was going to weld her catalytic cover back on and I asked her if she could get me mandrel bent piping as I am going to do a custom exhaust to use with the APEXi Dunk muffler I have in my garage. She said she could get the piping AND she'd weld it up for me!

Plus, she's actually pretty hot...

I'm not hitting fuel cut in any gear, but I tried the midpipe with FCD and would creep to 13psi so I put the hi-flo back on and the FCD is in my computer desk for now.

So you'd hit 13 PSI with just a DP, MP and catback combo? That's a bit too much power for me to deal with right now considering my clutch is kinda dying and I don't want to overboost my engine.

i've got intake, downpipe, mid pipe and RP catback and don't hit fuel cut. but i also have a ported wastegate on the stock turbo. i don't have a boost gauge yet so i don't know how much i'm running...but i guess its not over 8.6 or whatever fuel cut is

buuuuuut, the RP catback is awfully small piping (50mm). i'm gonna throw on the N1 catback after i get an FCD. i'm sure that catback will raise the boost 2.5 inches to 3.4"

Thumbs up

Wow, talk about "blast from the past". I made this post 3 months ago, and here it is again

I STILL havent installed my exhaust but I have gone up from catback to full (or turbo back), meaning that I'll get DP, high-flow, and catback, all 60mm, so I'm cool
On the other hand I have installed the FCD, just to have it there, so I'm ready in any case.... As soon as my exhaust goes in (and I drop a big fat cone filter), we'll see what psi I'll hit...

kinda in the same boat with u there...except i got a apexi catback N1 and a boost controller...

last summer when i didn't have boost controller and removed cat..
i think i was running about 11psi or more (didn't have a boost gauge at that time)....
no fuel cut though...i have heard from other guys on the forum that they don't hit fuel cut when boost over 8.6psi...and i don't think the preowner of my car instlalled the FCD..
boost controller now is to lower boost...down to 0.5 bar..
about 7.5-8 psi..
it's good enough...don't wanna take the risk of blowing..
and don't think fuel upgrade is fatal for my car now...
but it should be done...problaby a bigger fuel pump or something

What's up daddy-o! I've been slammed lately with my finals and work. I'm done today at about 2:30, but I have some stuff going on. I'd like to take a look at your car, maybe tomorrow, as I don't have to work til 3:30. I'll call you this afternoon...

Yeah, I took it out for a spin on I-205 in Oregon and 3rd gear was absolutely vicious!!! I came up on cars so fast I never got to 4th, plus I didn't want to hurt the car. Amazing transformation...

That same day I took it to a shop I frequent and they setup a boost guage and told me it was hitting 13psi in 3rd.

Regarding selling the FCD - I had it for sale last month in the For Sale section (no bites). Since then I've decided to keep it and get another MP but this time hook up an air/fuel ratio guage and port the wastegate
