stock temp gauge sensitivity

I remember reading somewhere that the stock temp guage is not very responsive to changes in the temp. That it only has 3 basic settings...cold, normal and hot. I also remeber that there was some sort of electronic gizmo that incresed the sensitivity of the gauge. However, i think that gizmo was made for the 3rd gen. Anyone know what i'm talking about? Is there a gizmo like that for the FC?

I think the 86-88 ones are sensitive, the 89-91 are suppose to be the same when it is warmed up, but one thing I noticed about my 90 and my friend's 91. His is right at the half way mark, mine is always a tad below it in the winter. Half in the summer.
