Send it directly to Pioneer
Should get a complete refurbish for around $125. Thats what I did, and would do it again in a second. And you get a Factory guarantee on top of it all.
Typically they want you go go through a "factory authorized repair station". So, check the list in the phone book/web site and see who will do it for the least add on $. Lots to choose from, so a competitive situation that should work in your favor.
As an alternative, watch for auctions on E-bay from sellers with excessive and unblemished feedback. I've had good luck with the guy behind this auction:

I went through the same problem about 4 months ago, so maybe I can save you some grief.
1. Go to the Pioneer web site. There will be a list of certified service centers. Once you have found one or more in you area call and ask if they have the manual for your model. You will have to remove it and get the specifics from the back. Easy removal, if you need help I will detail for ya.
2. If you have the most common problem I suspect it has the well known "skips/shuts down with a bump" syndrome. Yes? Well first try to clean it yourself (the CD player) with a commercial cleaner kit. Cheaper than having a shop charge $50 plus.
3. If not fixed, it is most likely the lazer assembly. Where I got into trouble was the shop insisting he could only change the lazer. Turns out to do so requires two allignment harneses and a 40 page manual allignment process that I was told could take up to 3 hours. Besides the allignment harness are very hard to find. Thanks to Icemark's response to one of my posts, he suggested that the entire "skid" should be replaced and that it would not require allignment and would need only 2 - 4 screws to pull/replace. He was right on the money.
4. So, go to the Pioneer Certified shop after you have tried to clean the lazer, and tell them you need the complete lazer "skid" replaced. It cost me about $165.00 (~ 95 parts & ~ 60 labor) to get this done. Pioneer still stocks the "skid" so you will not have to face that problem.
Good luck. By the way, the skid nearly fixed the problem. It still skips occasionally with a stiff bump but before a sneeze shut it down.

For overall reference....
Here is a cut and paste of some PM interplay:
I had mine done at the Pioneer location in Paramount (Long Beach), CA. Since I'm in So Cal, I was able to hand deliver it to save shipping.
Cut and past from their web site:
hours of operation are:
Monday thru Friday: 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM PST
(800) 421-1404
(310) 952-2247 (24 hour Fax)
Web Site:

Go to this URL for a list of local "Authorized Repair Stations" for a list of places to send it through:
