stock stereo wont turn on but backlight works
anyone have this problem before, my friend had the same prob in his t2.
wondering if its just a fuse, or something with the radio itself
its too dark and i dont have a good enough flashlight or i would check the kickpanel fuses.

I have my car in the progress, upgrding brakes, and i started her up and the radio turned on but just white noise w/blank screen! i was like wtf my radio **** the bed! so i said o well cause i have a spare but then i drove her around abit and tried the radio again and voila the radio works! i have no clue why or whynot but having an extra deck is really nice for that sad sad day when the stock deck really does **** the bed for good!

did anybody have a real answer for this one??? Mine is now doing the exact same thing as the original poster. My car sat up for a month but the battery never went completly dead.
......and yes the 20A fuse is working properly.

If it's lit up the radio is recieving power but is not functioning properly, no amount of fuse checking will fix this.
Pronounce the radio dead on arrival and get another one or have it repaired.

Check the harness plugs on the back of the unit as well. If the tape player isn't plugged into the radio, the radio won't work. Ditto with the factory EQ. If you have neither of these components, there should be a jumper plug on the back of the unit.

OK, Heres a fun one. The stereo will come on at different times. The channels will be lost but it will work fine until I turn the key off. There must be a loose connection. I am suprised that Icemark has not weighed in on this one.
The stock stereos suffer from the same electrical gremlins as the rest of the car including bad wiring and crappy soldering.
Unless you're an expert at this kind of thing you wont be able to repair it.

^^^All is right again in the Galaxy!!!
What is a "Room" fuse???
I am thinking that I'll have to pull the radio and check the plugs in the back. IF the plug that keeps power to the radio for the presets is disconnected........could that keep the radio from comming when you push the FM or the AM dial?? I mean those two switches are electronic. they have to have power to sense that they have been pushed and then turn on the radio......right??

Well the stock stereos were built by Panasoinc, Clarion and Pioneer, all brands that are not particularly known to build anything that lasts long term in automotive applications, so you can not rule out that the stereo itself is bad as well.
well, i had the same problem until i got ticked and punched my radio multiple times. Its work fine since then, one in a while you have to hit it bacuase it cuts out. lol hope this helps -alex

Mine is the pioneer. I am just not ready to put a new stereo in just yet. I need Tires, Rollbar, shocks, New Top, New leather seat covers and paint on the Hood and Trunk!!!
None of the above items are real bad they just need refreshing to look really good.
This happened to me. Lit up but didn't work. I have the pioneer unit with amp. I checked the fuses and hit the radio a couple of times. Didn't work. I guess I need a new one
This happened to me a while back, and I've had no radio for over 2 months.
It didn't cut off when I was driving either. One night I came home with the radio on. Turned the car off, antenna went down just like it always did. Next morning I started it up and tried to turn the radio on, nothing. Lights still work though. I checked the connections, everything looked good. I guess it crapped out!

its either it crapped out or you didnt hit it hard enough :p When i mean hit it, you REALLY have to hit it. I punched hard enough to crack the plastic facing. but now it works fine. Some times it will cut out. I just give it a light tap now and it comes back on.
