the little medal thing under it is what you have to loosen first, and then it unscrews off

Mazdaspeed makes some nice ***** that are direct screw on fit for the FC. Those universal fits are a pain in the ***. I've got a leather Mazdaspeed **** with the name embossed in the side and gate pattern on the top. The back side is dimpled leather. It's real and it's fantastic.

I had a Momo **** on my TII, and I ended up giving it away. It was always loosening, and being a general PITA. If you buy an aftermarket shift ****, get one that has the nylon insert that molds itself to the shift rod.

If you get a Mazdaspeed shift ****, you need an S5 shifter rod if you have an S4.

Different threading being the biggest difference.

Wait, which Mazdaspeed shift ****? I'm getting the leather Mazdaspeed one thats supposed to be made for the FD. (Miata shift ***** will fit S5 rods too.)

I just checked mine, and all you gotta do is twist it real hard, I thought you needed to mess with the medal thing, but you dont, so just twist as hard s yo can

You'll need to pull the leather/pleather shift boot down in order to see the locknut.

Go to Mazdatrix.com, look in "How-To" on replacing shifter bushings and you'll see how to take the shifter **** off... pictures are worth a thousand words

Ok, sorry about that.. thought they had pictures. Here you go: pull the shifter boot down from the top. If you look close, you'll see a bright shiny type washer snugged at the bottom of the ****... It's an odd shape, if I recall correctly. Hold the washer tight with an adjustable wrench, and twist the **** off , counterclock wise- I think You'll get it once you do a careful inspection.... Good luck
