Stock Muffler
Talk about luck...
I had 2 exaust leaks on my 88' conv. and had them fixed the other day at a local muffler shop.
Today i noticed that one of the tips on the driver side muffler has now fell off (guess it's on the road somewhere). I'm supose to go in for a smog this week....
Anyone know if i can just get a new tip welded on or if the whole muffler now needs to be replaced? This is the stock exaust, and i plan to keep it this way.
I'm due for a smog, and i know it won't pass with a missing tip, i'm looking for the cheapest way i can get this fixed and still pass smog with it.
Any ideas/suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

Same thing happened to me. I haven't gotten it fixed yet.
I took mine to a muffler shop, and they said they COULD repair it, but if the metal was in such bad shape that it would fall off, it could easily happen again. We jacked it up a bit and both mufflers were in pretty bad shape, and for a good, reliable fix both mufflers really needed to be replaced.
I haven't done it yet, but now I'm saving for a Racing Beat cat-back system... it really doesn't cost too much more than a couple of good mufflers.

Exhaust systems rust from the inside out, so if bits have started falling off it, its time is up! You can keep patching it up but it'll just fail somewhere else soon after (been there). It will need replacing in the very near future.
I can't see how a missing tip will fail a smog test though. It has zero effect on how the engine runs.

So i "might" be able to temp. fix it with a replacement tip...
What's a stock muffler go for roughly? IIRC the guy at the shop said $200+, but that might have been for an aftermarket replacement for it.

In that case a length of pipe welded to the end of the muffler by an exhaust shop will get you a pass, but I'd start planning to replace the whole system, not just the mufflers.
