i was just wondering how much boost can the stock TMIC handle?

 

maybe 12 lbs at most? i realy wouldnt run more than stock boost on that little ic cause your prone to detonate, u need a bigger one for extra cooling to prevent this

It depends on your other mods realy, 10 should be ok but if your gona start increasing boost make sure you get a boost and a/f gauge

 

what about with water injection?

im planning on running the stocker for a while boostin 11-14lbs(creep)... I have the fuel, so the IC is my only concern..

With WI and temp regulated water sprayer for the IC I sould be just fine right?

 

Spending a couple hundered on moving the IC up front would make a huge difference. Have you ever felt how hot the IC is after a half hour or more of driving. You could cook your breakfast on it. At that point it has lost virtually all of its functionality. A front mount would be cool to the touch after hours of driving.

So with the stock top mounted it is close to the same as running without an intercooler after a while of driving. Not safe at all for high boost.

 

I am going to weld 3 stockers together and mount them up front. Then I would be very comfortable with running 12# on the intercooler, the fuel system is a different story though.

 

I boosted 16 on a stock TMIC. By accident though...

 

The intercooler is just one of many factors when it comes to boosting "safely". Other factors include outside air temperature and pressure, humidity, fuel octane, engine tuning, compression ratio, condition of the engine and turbo, etc.

That will triple the pressure drop of the intercooler, as well as add some additional pressure drop from the FMIC piping. It is actually possible for you to increase your chance for detonation with that setup by causing the turbo to work harder to overcome the pressure drop.

If you are looking for a cheap intercooler, why not install a NPR intercooler instead?

The stock IC is in a lousy spot for thermal efficiency, but it is in a good spot for pressure efficiency. I'm not sure if moving it to the front of the car would be worth the associated pressure drop. I think it's best just to use a larger intercooler up front.

Every heat exchanger is going to get hot with use. Your stock IC will get hot, your FMIC will get hot, your radiator will get hot, your oil cooler will get hot, etc. That's just how they work.
