stock cats -- what do you think?

So I took the cats off today.. thought maybe they were blocked or something.

The pre-cat was completely hollow.

The main cat had one big block of charcoal type (about 2"x3") solid, which had holes thru it. I was expecting a lot of this kind of stuff as thats what i understood was supposed to be inside teh cats. The main cat also had a (steel?) wire mesh, which was just floating around in there and i believe it was mounted on a iron right which was to be mounted inside the cat. This mesh was broken off and the metal ring is also shuffling around in the main cat. I removed the mesh but couldnt get the big ol piece of round metal. The main cat is hollowed out besides this part.

What do you guys think? Is more of the charcoal type stuff missing? Could it have blown thru the main cat and possibly ended up blocked the y-pipe or mufflers? Is this worth investigating further or should i just bolt things back and start working ont he car.. (hot start problems, thought the cats might be blocked.. next up is injector change..).

Your thoughts?

depends how big of pieces the main cat was missing, someone previously had to of gutted the pre-cat or the main cat would have been completely obstructed.

the steel mesh is a buffer to hold the catalyst materials in place because the metal casing is going to expand and contract with heat.
