Stock Blow Off Valve?

hey, I got a '87 RX7 turbo, and this could be a really stupid question, but still, does it have a stock blow off valve? And would buying an aftermarket one improve the life of the turbo or just make a cool noise? THanks!

It wouldnt add any performance increase or improve the life of the turbo. Just the cool sound

not exactly. you can 'out boost' the blow off valve to a point that the blow off valve doesn't open enough causing too have some compressor surge.

our cars do have stock bypass-valves though, basically a blow off valve that reroutes the air it puts out back into the intake.

if you're bypass valve is defected and/or you just want a cool sound go ahead and buy a blow off valve.

How woudl you know if your bypass valve is defective. I don't think it is but I just bought this car like a month ago and I wanna keep the turbo on it going as long as possible.

Any problem with not routing it back into the intake?

when you start running more than about 11 12 psi you need to buy an higher flowing unit to prevent surge. It makes a gnarly sound too!

Sure, it'll leak at idle and you'd be lucky if you could hold an idle. That's why all the REALLY cheap DIY bov instructions you see on this forum are additions of brass check valves for the most part...

your wrong......As you start making upgrades a bov can increase the life of a turbo. If you do not have a ball-bearing type turbo it will cause compression surge. A larger blow out valve can protect your engine and reduce spikes. Some blow out valves actually keep your hp power linear. This is based on the spring rate.

This is only true if you are running higher then stock boost levels. In a stock config, there is no poin in upgrading the BOV.

I was thinking about screwing around w/ my stock BOV today, open it up so I could hear it. I have never worked on a car before so I need a little advice. The car is basically stock except for the exhaust system. I would go all out now, but I dont have the funds, I figure this is a slight tweak that wont cost me any money. And considering Ivenever worked on a car I dont want to start big.

Making that cool sound

What you can do to get that pppssssssssss noise is to let the stock BOV vent into the open atmosphere, but you must add a one way "swing valve" to the end of the open air tube so you do not get vaccum leak. Also, PLUG THE RETURN HOLE IN THE MASS AIR!!!!

Yeah, make sure its routed back to the intake or you will get some serious backfire if you are still running the stock ECU.

If you really must have the BOV noise, don't use a check valve (it'll reduce the BOV's flow), do this instead.
