Question Stock or aftermarket springs?

I recently bought an '86 Sport Coupe that is supposed to have the "hard" suspension. It rides very stiff and seems to sit quite low. I have been told that I have stock springs and I have been told that the springs are aftermarket, stiffer than stock and that the car is lowered a bit.

My question is how can I tell which it is? I have no other similar car to compare it to. Are there measurements than I can make that will tell which I have? If so, where should the measurements be taken from?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The NAs had a pretty soft & responsive ride to them, but after the shocks go the car tends to get bouncy in dips.

If the car feels responsive & stiff around the corners, you probably have aftermarket springs & shocks.

Coilovers tend to be a good comprimise between softness & handling.

Wipe the dust on them and tell us what color paint you see...
Gray = Eibach
Red = Racing Beat
Purple = Intrax

I'm sure I'll be corrected if any of that info is wrong.

yes ted you only got them mixed eibach is red and racing beat is gray. how much clearance do you have between the lip of your wheelwell and the top of your tire? on my gxl it's about 1" in the front and 1 1/2" in the back on sport and both the same on normal. is it the auto adjust suspention? also you can ghetto check your shocks by bouncing the corners 1 bounce is fine any more and you need new shocks. hope this helps

I dunno man, my Eiback Pro-Kit springs I initially had on my 1987 Turbo II was gray.&nbsp The Racing Beat springs I saw on a 1990 Turbo II was definitely red.&nbsp The pics on the Racing Beat site color their springs definitely red too...

My Eibach pro-kit springs are black. Unless they are a super dark grey. They also have a little Eibach logo printed on the in light grey or white.

If the springs are nasty/gnarly looking with tons of muck on them, they are probably not aftermarket. Stock springs settle about an inch over time. A car with old springs will look lowered compared to a car with new stock springs.

Oh, wait. You live in Florida. You might not have muck. Just dusty and old looking. Like the 'retirees'.
