Stock 88 GXL vs. 97 Stang GT-how bad am i gonna get beat?

My buddy has a 97 mustang gt, all stock. He heres Im gettin an "rx7" so he starts talkin **** saying, "oh they're suppose to be fast as ****, but Ill smoke you." So I try explaining to him that they are fast for the size of their displacement and all that. So I also tell him he wont make me look like Im standing still. He can drive good, but so can I. How bad am I gonna look?

well, the 97's aren't "that" fast. maybe a mid 14 in the 1/4 mile( although i've seen about 3 run and they never broke a 15). does he have a 5-speed? if the car you're getting is stock you'll get beat pretty good IMO. good luck though

Youll get beat pretty bad. Your car is a high 15 sec 1/4 car, and his is a mid 14 sec car. That is a lot of difference, many car lengths. Find a friend with a turbo...you wont be able to beat him without serious mods or nos.

His car unless its a TII stock is a 16.5 or up car. The GT is going to run at worst prolly high 14s. 2 seconds? Think about this. You standing on the side of the road & a car goes by you going say 80 mph...wait 2 seconds and another come by...how far behind do you think he is at that speed? Pretty damn far. Don't race. Make excuses till you get some mods I raced my friends 300zx TT & I took him from the start but after the first 20 or 30 feet it was really really sad.

Some dude I know has a post 95 GT, and he has a K&N FIPK, and Flowmaster exhaust. He couldnt get it to break 15.5 on the G-Tech. Its a 5 Speed.

If I were you, i'd convince him to race someplace with some sharp turns, thats were us na guys have to go for racing ... Seriously though, i raced a '00 or so mustang 6 banger on the highway... and lost. I have an 86 na which at the time had no mods at all. Keep in mind that your car is 13 years old, it probably isnt running the qtr mile times it should anyway. My car ran a 16.6 or so on the g-tech, and i think i have it running pretty well. Good luck to ya,

~Jesse

What did you race the 300Z TT to? I raced one 0-100(about a 1/4 mile for both of us), and only lost by a car length and a half. I actually beat him off the line, and held him off all the way through 1st, he pulled the full car and a half on me in 2nd, and 3rd, neither of us could pull on the other. Very good race. He had intake, but was otherwise stock.

If you want to see my mods, they're in this thread.

Wink

i work at a drag strip, and i have seen TONS of 94-98 gt's run, and i know for a fact that with just an exhaust and intake, those gt's cant break into the 14's! even with very experianced drivers

You couldn't beat a V6 Mustang? I beat those with my 94 Cavalier (V6) and have beaten many with my 86 GXL.

Oh ya, and if you do race this mustang, you might save your cars reputation if you race to high speeds. I have been losing a few races and I came back and flew by my competitors once I got into 3rd and 4th.

Ya thats basically my race, but I didn't keep up with him after 2nd at all really. My car is completely stock except the holes in my exhaust, hehe.
