you shouldnt dry run it, its going to burn the pump up. what kind of problem are you having with the pump. i am currently struggling with mine also so hopefully i can help share my experiences with you.

i wouldnt recommend running the pump dry. from my experience i think it will just burn the pump up. and sometimes even if the pump runs without load it could still be bad when a load is required of it. i am currently having some problems with my fuel system also so hopefully i can share some of my experiences with you.

I've just got done with my fuel pump checks. I agree that dry running it can be harmful, however, in an effort to diagnos it i have checked them out of the vehicle numerous times. I don't run it off the battery though, i use a small battery charger. You will know immediately if it works. Another way of testing it is to remove the access cover. Pull off both the fuel lines. I use a plug that i have cut off of a car in the salvage yard and have it wired up so i can plug it in directly into the existing wiring harness. This allows ease of testing. Sometimes the fuel pump works but the rubber hose inside the tank that connects the pump to the metal line goes bad, leaks and doesn't give the required pressure to pop the injectors. Are you sure the main relay is okay and the fuse is good? I have blown my fuse to jumping the bypass connector under the hood. Either way, with the pump in the car and running fresh voltage to it, hoses off, you can tell instantly if it is pushing fuel, running(vibrating but no fuel), etc. Using the plug also protects the cars circuits from back feeds.

Firstly, the fuel pump will not run unless the engine's running (airflow meter not closed) or cranking (key in START position), so you must jumper the yellow check connector beside the RHS strut tower to bypass the airflow meter safety switch and turn the ignition on. Only then will you be able to measure voltage at the pump.
If that doesn't work then you need to check the whole circuit to find the problem. The fuel pump circuit is quite simple and easy to follow, just get a wiring diagram and follow the 12V path. Check each component in the circuit for voltage (15A ENGINE fuse in driver's footwell, circuit opening relay under dash, resistor/relay in engine bay (except for S4 NA) and fuel pump).

im not getting power to the main relay. but when i hook it up directly to the battery it works, i can hear it klick. i am also not getting power to the coils. now i did this using a voltmeter and grouned the negative and put the posativ end to the wiring harnes. I checked it while the car was "ON" and while cranking. no power to eather. so of corse the relay does not click while hooked up to the harness, so i know there is somethign wrong with the harness. any way i can fix this. could it be grounds.........i mean i checked the wires going from the harness directly useing a voltmeter and grouned well.
