sticky guages

alright so i have a 89gxl and for the most part everything works except for a few little things. the one i am looking at fixing now is the gauges.

i notice when i rev the engine and drop it again the needle on the tach goes down get stuck for a second at around 3k goes down gets stuck again at 2500 and keeps going like that for just about every 500 rpm increment. but you can hear the engine rpm go down so i know its the gauges. and once i hear the audible sound of the rpm dropping and give it a good couple of smacks the tach reads 750.

next my coolent temp does the same thing. i start the car when cold, rpm goes to 3k, drops to 1500 then slowly goes down to 750 rpm after multiple smacks to the dash to get it to fall back down. and durring all of this the temp does not move. then all of a sudden boom. it kicks in and shows the temp.

also the oil pressure gauge seems to never work. this one i am less sure about. i have had the car running maybe 50 times and it has worked maybe 4-5 actually showing a oil pressure. do you think this one is just 'sticky' like the others or am i not getting enough oil pressure?

and my main question is how hard will it be to take apart the dash and clean everything? is there anything i should do while im in there? and how easy is it to just replace all of the guages with aftermarket ones? how about digital guages how hard are they to install and where is a good cheap place to get them? (being a university student suppporting myself makes me pinch any penny i can. lol)

sorry if this seems like a lot of writing for such a simple question.

RPM:
The tachometer receives signal from the trailing coils. (satch knows all about this stuff.)
How long has it been since you've changed your spark plugs?

COOLANT TEMPERATURE:
The coolant temperature sensor is located on the rear iron, left of the oil pressure gauge unit. It uses a "bullet" type connector, that slides onto the sensor. Be sure to clean that. (It is not always visible and/or easy to get to.) Sometimes it can get gunked up from being removed, forgotten, and then reattached. Perhaps there's some corrosion or gunk in the connector or on the sensor. Consider buying something like this: CRC - Electronic Cleaner

OIL PRESSURE:
You know that coolant sensor I mentioned above? The round disc-shaped thing to the right of it is the "oil pressure gauge unit". (This isn't always the easiest to get to, but tends to be pretty visible.) There is supposed to be a connector on that little "nipple" on the end of it. That connector and more GREAT information about this problem, are in this link: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...essure+Icemark
Icemark has a good drawing of that connector in the above thread.^

*As for replacing the stock gauges... It would be less expensive and more informative for you to fix these problems. If you search each problem you're having, you get more and more information, and the exact answers you're looking for. All of what you're experiencing has been discussed multiple times before.

It is a possibility that there could be some connection problems with the gauges, in the dash. Maybe even some sticky gauges. (I've not much experience under the dash.) And one last thing... You may want to quit smacking your dash.
