Steering wheel locking

I have a weird problem with my FC it's a 1988 GXL with a TII swap. When I start it if I don't turn the wheel as I start it, and then back and forth a few times quickly when it just starts the wheel will lock up, similar to if you are trying to move it when the car is off. It will move but it takes a lot of effort, it doesn't really feal like no power steering it feels more like it's actually locking.

If I get lucky and turn it enough when I start it, it feels perfect nice and smooth like I would assume it's supposed to. I have been living with it so far but I'm just wondering if anyone here would know what it is or how I could fix it. Because it's kind of annoying when I have to start my car 2 or 3 times if I don't catch it right and it locks up. It looks like I keep stalling or something... Any help would be greatly appreciated because I'm not extremely familiar with this type of problem I've never even heard of it before on any other cars I've had.

that sounds pretty dangerous, imagine if it locked while you were driving.

I'd take apart the steering col stuff, maybe look in the fsm

Someone probably fucked with it (When it was locked and tried to force it) or maybe the key part is broken (thats what controls it I think, key out turn wheel it locks... so its not keeping it in a unlocked way I guess)

hope that helps

The good thing is when it is locked I can turn it just a ton of effort, and so far it has never locked once it was already started. I was thinking it might be something with the key, or ignition. I have a Haynes manual so I can probably take apart the steering stuff when I get a chance and check it out. Just wondering if anyone had the same problem and knew what it was. Luckily I can usually get it to stay unlocked which is good, but it's still really annoying.

If you can still move it when its "locked" like, then I'd say someone tried to steal the car and break it.

That could be possible, I am at least the third owner of the car that I know of, and the person before me only owned it for about 2 years. He never really said anything about the steering wheel locking up but I noticed it pretty quickly after I bought it.
