which steering wheel to buy

i searched and didnt really find the answer to the question...
here go's....

ok i need to replace my steering wheel, and i may go with a stock replacement (which is fine with me), but i was wondering if you guys have any preferences with steering wheels...
i want a better looking one than stock, depending on the price and stuff, but my main concern is the visibility past the wheel....i noticed that the stock steering wheel is huge to allow you to see the guages behind it, and then i noticed that alot of replacement steering wheels are a good bit smaller.....i basically dont want to have my wheel in the way of my guages, so do you guys have any pics of what your aftermarket steering wheels look like?? as far as still being able to see your speed and rpms and what not...

thanks for any replies

Yo,

Here's mine:

Cribbed from another post:

The wheel I am using is the Sparco 383 Suede:

http://www.sparcousa.com/pswheel_competition.asp?id=139

The diameter is 330mm...the stock FC steering wheel is 380mm. Now, if I had to do this over again...I would probably go with a 350mm wheel. The 330 is pretty small...it will cover 4 of the 6 gauges in the instrument cluster.

But...it's pretty damn nice. I haven't had any problems with the instrument obstruction because my car is an NA. I don't have to stare at gauges constantly. *grin* I just drive the hell out of it. Road race, touge sessions, whatever.

The other thing is...suede is nice for the first few weeks...then it gets nappy. I've tried brushing it, cleaning it, etc...but it just kind of gets matted and that's it. I've had my eye on this wheel:

http://www.sparcousa.com/pswheel_street.asp?id=161

Since it has suede on the upper and lower for the race look, but the leather where you actually put your hands. I don't know if I like the swoopy design of the wheel, reminds me of the nasty MOMO Tornado wheel:

http://www.ltbmotorsport.com/tornadocarbon.html

Anyways, I do like my Sparco wheel. The small diameter kind of mellows out the somewhat twitchy overboosted feel of the stock powersteering.

Does anyone know if an 88 and up GXL steering wheel will fit on an 87 SE? I hate the old school look of my 87 and would like a cheap replacement of a newer 7 wheel.

Does anyone know where I can get a D-shaped wheel at? My knees are basically always touching the steering wheel and it makes it impossible to even try a heel and toe downshift (which I plan on learning). Corksport used to have a MazdaSpeed D-shaped wheel that I was going to get, but they don't sell it anymore.

Here's mine..

it's a 350mm Momo Race.. I LOVE it but it blocks the dash as well.. not a big deal IMO.. I was freaking out about it before I got it. As Kev says I'm NA so I just drive I love the way the car drives thout the stock bus wheel so it's nice.

I was gonna go with the 330 but like I said I was freaking out about how small it was so I went with the 350.. 30mm is noticable when driving.

Another thing to consider is how tall you are.. if you are short it probably won't block much.. I'm 5-11 and if I get my gangsta lean on I can see everything just fine but I don't like to drive like that.

In regards to a "D" shaped wheel.. The Sparco Ring is pretty tight.. this is the 330mm I "almost" bought.. but wused out with how small it is.. I'm glad I went with 350mm.

These were sold by Sled Driver and were custom made for the FC... They are.. amazing.. I love them and can't imagine life without them. amazing fit, finish and quality.

Problem is he doesn't make them anymore.

So there is absolutely no company that makes pedal sets with the widened bottom gas pedal for the FC? Man, that sucks! I wonder how much it would cost to get some machine shop to custom make something like that.

jsotelo: thanks for the pic of that Sparco steering wheel, I'll probably end up getting that even if it is kinda small. With my legs I need all the room I can get! lol

Does anyone know what wheel adaptor to get when changing the steering wheel? The vinyl is peeling off of mine and I want to get a replacement.

Momo Trek. Very nice wheel, I have never driven with one but have felt it in stores and seen it before and stuff. The top part is a really nice sort of Suade type stuff, the rest is just like any other momo wheel, sort of a hard plastic sort of rubber. I dunno, I like it though so its good. Bit smaller in diametre as well then stock wheels.

That Isotta looks nice and it's less than half of what I paid for my Momo.. of course mine says Momo on it so it's obviously better.. right?.. lol j/k

It looks very similar to my Race.. I'ver never seen one before. Very nice.. esp for the price!

Oh and that's quite the speed to take a pic at huh?

The picture was taken by hIGGI, on our way to a trackday in Sweden.
I would never risk it, taking pics at that speed.
hIGGI and I had to see if the 7 was capable of 200kmh in fourth----It was:bightumb:

Would the airbag still be function on the FD wheel if its swapped into an FC? Well im guessing that is has an airbag, could be wrong.

BTW- The stock wheel is kinda big but that doesnt bother me, but some of my friends have tried to sit in my car and find it hard without an adjustable steering wheel.
