starts with AFM unplugged
ok here goes
i just put a new(er) engine into my 88TII
i try to turn it over and there is no spark so it just spins the starter and tries to start the engine ..
i have fuel, as i have jumpered the fuel with the key in the on posistion and here it hissing ..
i know im not getting spark cause we checked the plugs for spark ...
last night , i measure a few things, and i have the right voltage at the front pack thing. .. where you disconnect the small white clip and test one of the plugs for 12 v
have it there
so i try to unplug the AFM and BOOM it starts, but then dies (obviously cause the afm is unhooked)
so that means i have spark (since the car finally started)
and i have read several posts on here where people had simlilar problems, switched out the afm and it worked just fine after that
my question is how would disconnecting the AFM make spark happen when spark wasnt there before?

me either ... i searched thru about 11 pages worth of threads and havent gotten a clear answer yet .. some people say it works for them, others say its cause the connections are releated or something ... hell i dont know ... DOES ANYONE??

hey, just thought of something...does the AFM plug wiring and the CAS plug wiring touch each other in that engine harness? (in other words, is the AFM wiring somehow shorting the CAS wiring inside the harness?)
all right man, let's try something...take the afm plug off, and jumper the first two pins together on the PLUG (not the afm connector (first two fwd as it sits on the AFM)...see what happens...BTW, do you have any jumper wires with alligator clips?(like the kind you buy at Radio Shack)
until I get a look at the ECU internal schematic, I'd have to say IT DOESN'T...dude, are you following me here- did you jumper that AFM plug? Then leave it (the plug)off, and try to start the car...you do at least have a small piece of wire, right?
the car isnt going to stay started with out those readings from the AFM ...
and you have no idea how sparse my tools are .. i dont know how we got the engine in and out with the tools ihave honestly

the ECU should "maintain a basic signal preset value" if the AFM readings are out of whack (fail-safe mode)- you're right, don't know if it will with the plug completely off, though....O.K., have you read out the AFM pins with a meter yet to finally rule it out? if ya want to, get back with me, I'll take you through it step-by-step...
man you rock ... your the only one even trying , and i really appreciate it ...
i already have another afm on the way and it should be here tomorrow or saturday so if that doesnt work ill be hitting you up thru PM
thanks man!!

clearly if you unplug it and it starts then you have faulty afms. even in the haynes it says to replace the afm with a new one. sheesh. the exact **** is with me. it died. then i replaced it and boom, started working again. just get a working one thats gauronteed.

i found it hard to believe that the afm wasnt allowing spark either. . . and i dont know the schematics of the ecu. . . the only thing i can think of is that the ecu doest allow spark to happen if its out of whack. . . i dont know how it does this since its not connected directly to anything ignition as far as i can see. . . i dunno to be honest. hopefully, hes gonna be getting that afm soon so we can put this to rest. . . im tired of this crazy fc stuff!!! hahaha. . . ****in fc's!!!!!
