Starting Trouble

Well, lately my car has been having trouble starting. Sometimes it starts right away and other times it won't. when it doesn't start, the car cranks as if it wants to but when I look at the speedometer and it says that my battery is pushing about 6 volts. and I just got a new battery and I got my alternator tested and it's fine as well. So I'm not sure what's going on, especially since I'm new to cars. Any suggestions for what the problem could be?

Does it say 6v all the time or just cranking? You may want to get a multimeter and check your voltage @ the battery/ECU/fuse block and see if you don't just have a bad connection somewhere.

It says 6v just when it's cranking.
Once I get to drive it, it goes up to 12v.

should be over 13.5 when driving or so, but the gauge might be a bit flaky. Is it worse right after turning the car off then coming back 10-15 minutes later? It might be the typical flooding.

also you should check the voltages at the battery terminals.
sometimes the cables or terminals need replacing.

I never know if it will start or not.
Take today for example, I just got back to school.
This morning it started right up drove for about an hour and 20 minutes,
I got to my school then parked my car turned it off. I didn't realize I left my windows down so I tried starting the car, but nothing happened at all. It wouldn't even crank, my radio wouldn't even turn on. WTF? It was working fine just 30 seconds before that!
