The car ran fine untill i tried to start it today after it was sitting for a while like an hour or two. It made a fan spinning noise but the engine would not crank the battery is fine and grounds are also. I later had to pust start it and it fired up on the first try. I think it is the starter soloniod but please help

starter seliniod will make a clicking sound if it works. If not it could just do nothing, or it could get stuck in the on position and continue drawing power from your battery until you have a melt down. if it makes a fan spinning sound it could be a worn starter gear. Its the one that matches up with the gears on the flywheel. Its softer than the metal on the flywheel so it wears out first. starting with a worn starter gear can be hit or miss just depending on what teeth are the most worn where.
hope this helps .

Same problem, starter would spin, sometimes it would engage, frequently wouldn't.

Removed starter and took to auto electrician and apparently the bendix is flty. I think that is a centrifical clutch in it. He is rebuilding it for me now. Couldn't get an exchange starter as the only ones available had the smaller pinion gear.

i sometimes have a starter problem also. used to be if the engine was cold it would barely turn over, and i have to give it quick gas or it will stall. now sometimes when the engine is warm it wont turn over at all, but get very close and you gotta give it gas as its turning to get it to start. not sure what to check though, im guessing my alternator isnt recharging my battery, but other than that i have no idea. maybe my spark plugs (installing new ones as soon as it stops raining) also if it doesnt turn over, if you go to turn it again it makes a horrible grinding sound, and you gotta turn it all the way off and then it will turn over.
