TX Starting my Teardown / rebuild! 86 N/A SPORT !

Well,
As the title states, I am starting my teardown and rebuild of my 86 N/A Sport. This will be engine only at first, possibly electrical upgrades as needed. (I have to use her as a DD for about a year so no go fast mods at this time) I am tearing the motor down because it burns coolant. (busted seal possibly bad housing....) Although it runs and drives fine now, I do not wish to destroy a good engine. There is just no excuse for doing something like that! I am sure I will run into a few snags and snafu ordeals along the way so, check back often

PICTURES to follow in a few hours.

Thanks and wish me luck....
(First rotary rebuild but, been working on engines for over 10 years now...)

TX Ewwww...

Got the UIM off and apart and ewwwww... Coolant gunk on the back of the throttle body, inside the UIM (only a light film of it)... How nasty! I will be putting up the pics of that tonight (check back after 6pm C.S.T.) then I will be moving forward to complete removal of the wiring harness and air pump / exhaust.

Thanks for watching, and it's slow going but better to be slow and right, then fast and sloppy...

Do it once, Do it right, then if ya need some more excitement in your life yank yer girls bikini and use it for a polish rag...

BTW, since this is my first teardown, anyone know where to get replacement connectors for the wiring harness? If not there is an Aviation connector supply company here in town that I know the owner of that could fabricate the connectors, but, i'm sure ill have to buy bulk so don't really want to do that but if i have to ill probably sell my spares

TX Update

Ok, so....
Here's what I've got done since last time
Wiring harness removed (engine bay)
All pulleys removed
air pump removed
water pump and housing removed
vac lines and fuel lines removed
etc.

Good News:
So far hardparts that I have removed look fine for re-use....

BAD News:
Most of the connectors on my wiring harness are so damn brittle they are breaking when removed...

All my fuel lines (soft lines... rubber) were so old and decayed and cracking, that I am suprised the previous owner hadn't burned this car to the ground... OMG it was nasty....

Injectors look a bit shakey, so I will send them out for cleaning / testing OR, maybe buy some new ones...

Lastly, on the lower fuel rail (closest to center of block on the top...) the contraption on the end of it looks warped???
(yes pics to follow im sorry...) I don't know what it is called but im searching for a picture of it now...

Thanks and yes I know, im slow with the pics but more coming....

TX update with pics ;)

Yeppers, I'm a slow bastard. Keep bouncing between the 88 vert and my 86 sport so lol, I got my hands full Got the engine out of the 86 Sport with this unusual method...
Stand in the engine bay, have buddy outside car in front, both grab motor, lift, set on truck tailgate...
hahaah, redneck as hell but lol, not very much space to work with in my garage at the house, which is why i took it to my shop. (no not my AUTO shop, actually, its got 2 unfinished airplanes in it... my pops obsession...)
Pics include, tranny, motor from all sides, etc. etc...
Starting the actual block teardown tomorrow after work so, more pics to follow tomorrow

enjoy and all comments graciously accepted!!!

More bad news:
Apparently one of the transmission bolt holes (in the rear end iron) has been broken off, so I will be needing a new rear end piece.
(Terms are a bit off right now as I am quite seething mad at my idiot boss for being a dick... yes I am on lunch break...)

Will be starting the actual teardown of the block tonight and will have some more pics tomorrow, thanks for looking and please, if anyone sees something amiss... please point it out as I'm going

So those are pieces of your pilot bearing. the pilot bearing is in the end of the eccentric shaft where the input shaft of the tranny goes. idk how they break or why, but I've had one come out like that on me. My mechanic that changed my clutch told me that it came out in several pieces. Chances are there might be pieces in there "welded" to the inside of the eccentric shaft, I had this happen when I went to change my tranny. So best of luck to you thats the best input I can offer.

yeah, i figured pilot bearing since it was making that weird whine/vibration noise when out of gear etc. etc.

Thanks for the reply... Anyone know if those heatspots are bad enough to force me to get the flywheel resurfaced??
Thanks!

Umm, that's your 5/6th port sleeve. How familiar are you with how they operate? They are somewhat important.

TX 5/6 port sleeves

I am not very informed on how these sleeves operate. What exactly is the point of the sleeves??? you can look in the fsm all you want, it just wont tell you why its there and what it does.... Please take the time to explain how the sleeves work and why they are important. Yes this is my first rotary rebuild. Diesel mechanic here so yeah, this is a bit of a new field to venture off into. i have faith... and LOTS of patience...

thanks!

The flywheel nut is 54MM, or 2-1/8". You can find the socket at sears, it's kind of pricey though.

"When i got the car the previous owner removed the fan shroud..."

Probably why you are burning coolant now. Who knows how long he had it off, but in the southern weather it probably overheated because of this (after prolonged use).
