PA Starting Issue 1987 Turbo II

Hey guys,

To get my 87 TII to start I always have to give it some gas. I know the whole un-flooding procedure with the relay etc but even when the car has been properly warmed up and you kill the engine you still have to give it a bit of gas to get it to start otherwise it just keeps cranking.

Once it starts it runs fine and idles fine as well.

Could this be somthing as simple as new spark plugs?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

EDIT: Just to clarify, once the car starts it runs strong, idles smooth, stays at good temp, oil pressure at 3000 rpms is about 65ish psi (on the stock gauge) and at idle (800-1000rpm) its about 45psi. No dummy lights are on, no burning coolant, normal oil consumption.

Leaky injectors? Whens the last time you've had them cleaned?

Ive only had the car about a month, so never. I dont know about the previous owner. Is leaky injectors the common cause of this?

If it's the stock 20 year old injector that has never been cleaned it could be. It could be low compression also

Thanks man,

I have not tested the compression.

Can you use the normal piston engine type compression tester (that you just screw in on the spark plug threads) on a rotary?

Also is there any trick to seeing if the injectors are leaking (ie pulling out a spark plug to see if it is wet with gas) or anything like that which could help clue me in as to if that is the problem with out taking a buch of stuff apart?

It could be the BAC isn't functional. The BAC goes and stays full open when you hold the key to START, letting in more bypass air. Similar to what you do when you stab the pedal when trying to start the car as you described.

P.S. when you feather the pedal when your starting the car ...............your not adding a drop more fuel. No more at all. Just letting in more air.

Never had a leaking fuel injector in my life ever on a RX.

Thanks for the reply, Maybe it is the BAC, I will have to check that! I assume that you are supposed to hear a clicking solonoid on the BAC when you turn the key to start the car? Is the best way to check the functionality of the BAC to just look for that "click" from the BAC when the key is turned? Sorry Im new to FC's...

Appreciate the help guys!

Yeah. Just HOLD the key to Start and it'll click but I don't see how your going to hear it if the starter is spinning over. You could just unbolt it (two nuts) and hold it with the elect plug on it and have someone HOLDs the key to START.

The thing inside (piston) should pull back and stay back/open as long as the key is HELD to Start. It moves only about a quarter inch open and NEVER pry on the guts of it with anything other than a wet noodle.

Normal operation of the BAC at idle is for it to buzz and approx 120hz, but during START it goes wide open and stays that way for ease of starting (more air bypassed by the throttle plates).
