Angry Starting and holding

Alright ive got me some ?'s here. *searched*

Info: car is an 88 gxl.

alrighty down to business. Now the car starts nice and easy, just a few secs of cranking and it fires right up--but dies right away UNLESS I punch and hold throttle at 4000rpms for about 10 secs. Then it holds its idle on its own. So ive ruled out vacuum because it can hold its own. I dont believe its the TPS because once its warmed it idles where it should.

Another tidbit of info: When the engine is warming up, if i suddenly push the gas, I get no sound and the engine cuts for like 1.5 sec then backfires and gains rpms. Itll do this like 10-15 presses before its warm.

Now im not neccessarily sure this is a problem but it is all rather annoying--any ideas?

It is fuel related, in that the engine is going lean for a second before the fuel system reacts to the change in throttle position. So there is an issue with the sensors measuring the air coming into the engine and giving it the right amount of fuel.

There are quite a few things it could be. I wouldn't rule out a vaccume leak right away though. I would start with a good check to see if there are any cracked or missing vaccume lines, and second I'd make sure all the main grounds are decient.

Have you checked to see if the ECU is throwing a code?

ok take some STARTER FLUID and spray it all around your engine. if the rpms go up or just change in any way you got a vacuum leak. dont over do it and set fire to ur car.

Well, im not sure to see if im throwing any codes, but I do have a new idea. IIRC, it started doing this after I redid my intake again. so I think im going to return it to my previous setup to see if it remedies anything. OR it could be the way I set up my 6pi--Ill try to get a pic up to show.

Anyways, I think you should also get a standard tune-up of vacuum lines (as others have said) and check your fuel filter as well as anything else electrical. Mine used to give me troubles until I had fixed all the common things...
