Do all the idot lights and such go dim?

Sounds like the battery posts may need cleaning.

Check the easy stuff first.

Sometimes, when starters get old, they dont always spin when you turn the key. A way to get it to work is hitting it with a hammer. It knocks something around inside of it to get the connections going so it will work. A permanent remedy for this is a new starter.
