Talking Starter wiring help?

I'm trying to install the starter in my car to see if the engine will start after the rebuild. There are 3 wires to deal with: 2 heavy gauge wires and one small spade connector. The spade connector goes to the only place it can. Then after that I don't remember where the other 2 go. I think one goes to the solenoid itself, is the other a ground? This might have been super stupid of me, but I hooked both wires up to the solenoid during my process of elimiation, and as soon as I hooked the battery up the starter began to spin... any thoughts?

red cable is gonna go on your solenoid and the ground cable should only reach to the left bolt of your starter, and the bolt goes through it, as i recall it anyways
