Starter shorting out

Just a quick question, if my starter has shorted out, that means I need to get a new one, correct? And since this has happened several times, how can I fix it so it doesn't short out in the future?

Thanks,
Jordan

If your starter is screwed, yes, you need a new one. Cant tell you how to fix your starter killing problem, but if your car is leaking oil all over the starter that will kill starters real quick.

Hmm there is some oil on it, but it's not leaking like crazy. I mean if you saw it, it would probably look normal.

you may want to run a new power cable to the starter. it could be bare and touching the side of the starter causing it to short.

How much have you been using the starter? got starting problems? could just be burning the starter up

The power cable is the larger one wrapped in the black plastic, right? I think most of it is alright, but I don't think it would hurt to re-do it. My engine was previously flooded really bad and it takes a few tries to start every so often like in the morning when it hasn't been warmed up.

I tested the starter and it's locking up. The solenoid works but it's having trouble spinning. So I ordered a new one from NAPA, which has a lifetime warranty. No more buying a starter from the junkyard...
