Starter removal and installation
I have a 1988 RX7 Turbo II (13B, manual trans). I'm almost 100% certain my starter is shot. My battery is new, and when I turn the key the starter spins but the engine does not crank. Attempted to start a couple times so probably flooded as well. Happened overnight: started one day, next day failed.
OK, assuming my starter needs replacing, I look in my Haynes manual and read the following:
"Note: On some vehicles, it may be necessary to remove the exhaust pipe(s) or frame crossmember to gain access to the starter motor. In extreme cases it may even be necessary to unbolt the mounts and raise the engine slighty to get the starter out."
Say what!?! I hope my vehicle is NOT in this category. But has anybody run into this issue when swapping out their starter? It really matters to me because I have to pay somebody to do the work.

You don't have to remove any exhaust or crossmembers its really easy to remove and you can have it off and replaced in 30 minutes yourself. It sounds like it might be your solenoid though if it spins but doesn't catch. Before you go spending money replacing the whole starter i would get it tested.

Disconnect battery
raise car on Drivers side( safeely and secure)
go under and remove Starter with a 14 mm Wrench and Rachet/socket
wires are removed with a 12mm and 8 mm.( I believe)
.simple as going for a Poop after Exlax.quick and easy.
remember that the Top starter bolt holds the Ground off the harness(on the front of the top hole,of engine),so make sure you slip that back on the bolt before you Tighten tehbolt up.
or else you get no Start..!!1

Thanks guys. I called Mazda for a quote on a starter/solenoid and was quoted $164.78. I was a bit surprised expecting a much higher price. The guy came back with a sarcastic reply: 'there's only eight left in the entire country and we're trying to unload them'. I had to laugh; it must be tough being a parts rep.
I believe I have a volunteer to swap out my starter. I've found cheaper prices all over the internet, all claiming to match my vehicle. Any brands to avoid?
