Got intermittent starter problems, unfortutnalty it doen't click on when I turn the key. Is it the switch or the starter?

Can you hear the starter motor turning when you turn over the key, but the engine does not start? Or is it nothing?

If it is the first, then the selenoid that engages the gear in the starter and pushes it out to connect with the flywheel gear-ring is probably bad. If it is the second, I would say you have an electrical problem in some other area of the car. Pull the starter and apply 12v to it. You should see it spit the gear out and spin. If not, replace it. If so, you have a problem with the switch.

 

Do what Thingol says. And then you might get under the car and look at the wires. The single wire that goes to a blade on the starter is the wire that energizes the starter. Put a meter lead on that wire and the other meter lead to a ground. Have someone turn the key on. Did you get about 12v? If not your problem might be the starter cut relay. Its mounted next to the clutch fluid resivior and the trail coil. You could pull the plug off it and see if you have 12v at the Black and Green wire when the key is turned. If it does not have 12v there , there is something called a interlock switch between there and the key. This switch is a three hole connector with only two wires going to it. One is the black and green wire and the othere is brown and red. Now for the guessing game. That interlock sw I THINK, but am not sure, is the sw that is activated by the clutch pedal. If you look under the dash you'll see this sw. Its found by following the clutch pedal from the bottom towards the top of the pedal. Its located , or to be more accurate actuated by the clutch pedal lever, by a plunger.You could pull the plug off and jumper the plug for the sw if you think its bad, then try to start the car. A lot depends whether or not you have 12v at that single connector at the starter when the key is turned.
