Starter Motor/Wiring Problems

My cars starter is not working properly. It used to work for about 5 seconds then stop, turn the key and it would work for 3 seconds, try it again and only works for a second or so. Then it started clicking fast but still turning the engine over slightly at each click. Now it does nothing. Turn the key and it doesnt even click. Is it fried?

Sounds like a dead battery to me.
Here is a quick check list.
*Make sure the battery terminals are connected securely to the battery and that there is no corrosion. If there is, remove the cables and clean well.
*Next get in the car and turn the key to the "ON" position and look at the voltage gauge to see what your at. It should be no lower than 12 at all.
*If it is lower than 12 volts recharge.
* if it is not lower than 12 volts turn the key to start the car and watch to see how low the voltage drops. It should not drop lower than 10 volts. If it does recharge.
* if recharging the battery does not help the battery may be to old. If it is more than 3 years old and is not driven on at least 3 times a week than this may be the case.

i agree..

take the battery out and get it load tested at a shop that advertises free battery check!serious..and clean the battery terminals. Up here in Canada they will test batteries, starters, alternators, anything ( I usually get it tested and then say I have to go get the money..fish!!)if your battery isn't the culprit..(though you figure that a starter sucks alot of juice) then I would be leaning towards the starter..just my $.02..from a Crazy Canuck!

New battery terminals are like $5 or something. I just replaced mine and it's extremely simple. My old ones were all messed up and stuff, never good.

Found the problem. The previous owner installed a jumper and it was unplugged. Thanks.
