starter

how many rpm should my starter be turning the engine over at? its a s5 tii

my haltech is reading somewhere between 120 and 200rpm. is this normal. im having some starting issues on a fresh rebuild and im checking all my bases

when you click the ignition to on the needle should move, then when it cranks it will bounce anywhere between 0 and 300rpm. If all is good it'll start.

Check the wiring on the starter and the Crank sensor as well as the battery terminals.

That's from memory. I'll look later today and if I'm off in the figure above, I'll post the other figure.

That's a difficult question you asked. I mean, what are YOU observing for the rpm and what are you using? Don't use the tach because that is not an accurate method in my opinion. Maybe a digital meter set of freq and the fuel cut so the thing won't start, would be a worthwhile method.

Nah. With the fuel pump disabled its more in the 215-220 rpm range when constantly cranking. Closer to the 220rpms. Series four turbo.

Someday I'll check the non turbo car. I remeber the 230rpm figure from somewhere.

I think the FSM says it should be between 200-250rpm

Im reading the rpm from my haltech via my laptop. im getting 120-200rpm
