Started engine bay disassembly, hoping someone could point out diagrams for everythin
Hey everyone, it was such a beautiful day that I decided I should start removing everything from the engine bay so I can pull the motor and everything and then clean and re-paint the engine bay as well as rebuild the motor (and do all my emissions removal, mods, etc, etc, etc).
I first thought I could just post pics here of every little part and ask for help in identification, but I think it would be less of a headache on you guys if someone could point me in the direction of diagrams of everything in the bay so I can identify everything. I currently have the FSM and Haynes manuals in print, so just posting page #'s/sections will do.
I also thought I could start my tear-down/rebuild thread, but I'm not sure how much time each day I can spend out there disconnecting things (I live in an apartment w/no garage), so I don't want to start a thread of that type and just abandon it or not put up huge updates every often.
For now, I'm just taking LOTS of pictures and labeling as much as I can so I can make sure everything that I disconnect will be put back in the right spot (only if it needs to be put back, heh).
Just curious, though...has anyone else had a tough time removing the sub-zero start assist tank??? The rust had settled on the bracket to the point where it wouldn't slide out, so I spent about 30 minutes turning the bottom bolt 1/4 turn at a time, almost dropping my wrench every time. Thankfully, I got it out.

Good luck with your rebuild! Ziploc bags and a sharpie will be your best friends! keep track of what you tear off and where it went, cuz it sounds like you've got your work cut out for you! As for page numbers and what not, There are many many many many diagrams in the FSM..... it would be a wiser idea to get to know the index.

I thought I was the only one who had to do that. Every writeup makes it sound so easy. Than you realize you have to reach behind the bottle with the charcoal canister rubbing against it and you unloosen the bolt 1/4 turn for 30 mins only to drop the nut at the end. Oh well, atleast the bottle is out. Now to cap off the block....
I think one of the reasons I'm taking this so slow is because I'm afraid to disconnect all of the vacuum hoses and wires connected to the motor for fear of not getting everything reconnected (though I guess there's a lot of stuff I'm going to be capping off w/my emissions removal *hooray NC inspection laws for pre-96 vehicles, haha*)

Thanks arghx, I'll def be referencing that often.
Just an update on progress: got the water pump pulled, OMP removed, then pulled the UIM/dynamic chamber and fuel rails, then pulled the rat's nest. It's getting dark, so I'll worry more about the LIM and other things tomorrow (if I have a couple hours to work on it).
Removing the UIM was TOUGH, because I thought I could first remove the dynamic chamber and throttle body and then move onto the LIM. NO, heh. We pulled and pried and couldn't get the UIM/DC disconnected, so I said "well, let's just try the LIM because there's only 5 bolts holding it onto the LIM. ...disconnect everything, and bam, easy as pie.
Maybe I'm just a stickler, but seeing all these old rubber hoses hard as rock scares me a little and makes me wonder how well my car could be running if just all of the hoses were replaced. Thankfully, a lot of them will be gone now w/the rat's nest removed.
Arghx, you goto the Raleigh meets much? I'd like to make it up there some time and say hey to everyone that frequents the forum and hopefully I can now that I have some free weekends coming up.
by the way...now that i've got most everything disconnected, i get to see the core all by itself and, i've got to tell you, it's amazing. to think that so much power comes out of such a small package...the closer i get to pulling the motor, the more excited i get about rebuilding it.
when we got the UIM off today, we just stopped and stared for a bit and weren't sure what we were seeing was real...we're just like "wait, the transmission starts way up here? that means the motor is only *this* wide" (using our hands) i love wankels
only had an hour out there, so i was only able to pull the LIM and its actuators, etc. i tried to pull the exhaust manifold, but my sockets aren't deep enough to remove the nuts holding it to the pre-cats, so i'll have to get a socket that can handle it tomorrow
