Starion Intercoolers - What is the max PSI/HP they can support in a FM/VM setup?

I know that the stock intercooler is *normally* only good for ~10-12 PSI for any reasonable amount of time.

Does anyone happen to know what the peak horsepower/psi a starion intercooler will support? I'm planning on either mounting it Front Mount or V-Mount configuration, with isolated ducting (I.e; directed and separated from radiator ducting).

I'm looking to run it with a BNR stage 2 on a ported engine with a HP goal of about ~350Hp. It will mostly see autocross and track use, so it needs to be effective for more than 14 seconds at atime

Thanks!

No, I haven't... . Is there a good place to get some sort of flow/volume/dimension numbers for different stock intercoolers?

The reason I'm considering using a starion IC is because I have one already in the garage

take a picture of it and post dimensions of the core and inlet/outlet pipes.

arghx - The dimensions are 16.5x6x3", according to some website I've found it on (I'm at work now so I can't run out and get the dimensions. I found a pic online that looks like mine: http://www3.telus.net/public/kichurc...%20outside.JPG

I was reading on a few DSM websites, half the people say theirs is great the other half says that they're the worst pieces of crap ever made.... Sounds like this forum!

Thanks.

Glad to hear, guys! I got the Starion IC a year or two ago from a DSM friend of mine for $25, or lunch, or something of equivalent cost so I was hoping to use it... All I'm planning on doing with it is changing the inlet and outlet pipes so they're straighter back.

Thank you!

starion works well and even better if you modify the end tanks for bigger inlet and outlet.

you could sell it and get a $50 dollar bar and plate off ebay though...

Any idea what size I should look at putting on there? The default size is 1.75" ID (I believe, I'm still at work so I haven't measured, I will tonight)... Would moving up to 2.0 or 2.25" Be all that advantageous? Remember, I'm not looking for crazy high dyno winning HP, predictable, low lag reliable performance is good for me.

got one of hmt cheap. You can find them on there if not anywhere else.

Mine, well i gave it to a buddy to get the end tanks redone a year ago when i was boosting my n/t eclipse and never saw it again. I bumped into the guy when i got my rx7 and he asked if "I STILL NEEDED MY INTERCOOLER".

What a ******* **********. Needless to say we're not buddies anymore and i really miss that intercooler. Never even got to use it.

To the OP, i recommend you find a shop and have them put atleast 2.5" inlet/outlet jawns on it. People say that the stock inlet/outlet size is too small for a 4 banger. If that's the case, it'll definately be too small for a rotary. I dont know for sure. It just seemed to make sense. Less restriction. Plus, most piping kits come in 2.5 and 3".

Thanks for the heads up, NoPistons... I hate to be really stupid about this, but can I simply cut the top "square" off where the outlet is and weld in a new one with the 2.5" pipes? We have a pretty nice welder at work and I think I can do this myself

Thanks!

I grabbed a few pics running out the door to work today...

It looks like the top "rectangle" of the end tank is approx 2 3/4" x 2 1/2". What I'm thinking about cutting the end tank out where I drew the red lines in the picture below, and making is a rectangle to circle piece and welding that on to give me the 2 1/2" that I need...

Is this what you guys were talking about above?

Thanks!
