Standt Radiator Caps Killed My Engine!

Well, I noticed the coolant level low a few weeks ago and topped it off.

Today I was coming back from work when the car started to have a lumpy idle at the off ramp. I then started driving and saw a puddle where my car just was.

I got through 2 red lights and then the temp guage started to soar.
I instantly shut the engine down and coasted into a neighborhood.

The temp guage got to about a 1/4 inch from the end mark on it(almost to the top).

I popped the hood and saw froth coming from the overflow resevoir.

I waited for an hour and let it cool down. I drove about 1/4 mile and the temps started rising.

I shut it down and coasted again. I then waited until I was able to remove the radiator cap and fill it with the water I had in my storage bins. I had my dad drive to me with an extra new cap I had at my house.

I then tried to start it and it would turn over but not run.

At that time I was getting nervous.I had my friend start towing me home.

On thw way I put it in 2nd as I was being towed and it started up. I reved the engine to 2k and let my foot off the gas and put the clutch in. It then died on me.

I jump started it again and kept the RPM's over 1k.
I made it home about 15 seconds later and my friend said he saw white smoke. I'm thinking"That's ******* great!"

I end up keeping te engine over 1k and drive it into my driveway. After a couple seconds I let off the gas and it idles by itself kinda rough. After a few more seconds it gets to a normal idle.

I then shut the engine off and tried to restart it but it went back to not turning overand running.

I'm going to take the plugs out tomorrow and clean them and see if any coolant spits out.

In the mean time.Anyone know what's goin on? Is it the seals? I'm guessing it is because I unflooded it multiple times and it wouldn't run from a stop turnkey.

First of all, when you noticed low coolant, a check should have been made to find the reason for the loss. Anytime a closed system, eg cooling, a/c system is found to be low, there is a reason. The rad cap @ 16/18 lbs will only raise the boiling point. If the engine is too weak to accept that minimal pressure, something is wrong. Check when you pull the plugs, and crank the engine over also to view any moisture. Pull egi fuse, so no gas is flowing. I would put a pressure tester on the cooling system to be sure. It's possible there was an external leak, but overheating caused an internal problem.
Good luck!

Well, I know it is the radiator cap because I bought this one a few months ago because the other one failed.

I took my spark plugs out today and confirmed that my rear housing has a coolant leak.

So now my GTU is SOL and I have to drive my SE again.
I am planning on getting a Jspec and doing the swap because I will not get anymoney for this car with a dead engine and this this is almost mint interior and body.

sucks that you blew a coolent seal

!!make sure to start the car a few times a week!!
if you just let it set, the water will fill the combustion chamber and rust everything inside. the rotors and housings are probably still ok, so you could part the motor, when your ready.

Wow. Back from the dead!

Don't listen to what I wrote above there. I was just guessing at what was wrong. The radiator cap failing could have attributed to the engine's death but I'm thinking it was already in the works.

I've now gone onto bigger and worse engine problems. Boost problems and idle surges
Ah the lovely turbo rotary!
