Splicing S5 alt plug onto S4 engine harness???

first of all i am pretty sure i haveto do this splice, but as a double check, does the S4 plug fit the S5 alternator??

if not are the wires the same, colorwise?? and will it be ok to use inline crimps???

Thanks
Justin

Sorry, dont know about the wires (dont have the S4 wiring diagram, I do have the S5 but cannt compare).
I dont think that the wires will be different though, because there is absolutely nothing that needed to be changed. Its not like you have to "control" the alt or anything.

As for the connections, remember that almost 80A can go through there. I think that you can find crimps for these amperages, but arcing is VERY possible if the crimps are not connected perfectly. I would prefer either crimps with solder, or bolt connectors (either wire has a ring connector, and you bolt them together, much like the connectors on the battery's poles).

thank for the reply, my problem is that i SUCK with solder, can you give some more info on the bolt connector??? and are you sure that much current will flow through it, i hought that would be the power cable, these wres are only like 18 ga. at most

thanks

Go to a GM dealer. They stock HIGH quality crimps. They also have built in heat shrink, to protect the crimp and a hot melt glue, to mechanically anchor the crimp and wire.

Here is an online source for these type of connections:

No, the plugs are totally different.

What you can do is the following (you don't have to splice anything):

Take 2 short wire (guage 16 or 18). Connect 1 male 1/4 inch quick connect on one 1 end, a female 1 on the other end.

You can get those quick connects (don't know if it's the right name) at radio shack, walmart, autozone, etc (same kind as the ones used for TPS light).

Connect the female end to your s4 plug.
Connect the male end to the alt voltage regulator plug.

You have to connect the L together.
You have to connect the R of the S4 plug to the S of the S5 alt (look at the alt, it should be written on it what is what).

For the + output,
the easiest way is to swap the plastic black posts from the s4 alt to the s5 alt (just remove cap and unscrew and swap them).
The other way is to connect the battery + to the screw that holds the plastic black post on the s5 alt but you have to do a cut with a dremel.

Hugues -

Are you willing to risk a "dirty" signal in the electrical system. We have enough problems as is with noise and ground.
Straight crimp connectors installed with the typical $2.99 tool have an extremely high failure rate over time. The connector corrodes, mechanically fail. Why not just do it right the first time?

Yeah, sorry about that, I just went down to the garage and checked
I think these are very low amperage wires indeed, and their meaning/operation shouldnt have changed between S4 and S5. I think the plug is the same as well, so it should fit right in.

Dont quote me on the last comment though, this is by memory from a S4 that I saw a couple days ago....

You still have to verify that the two alts are producing the same signal at the terminals (test each wire independently with DMM), and that the plug is "expecting" to see the same signal as well (ECU-wise).

Again, I have no proof of this, and I'm commenting based on my memory, and not by actually working/looking at the cars.

man i jsut took off the old alt and the wires for it (aside from having some of the insulation stripped off) are about 24 ga, while the S5 wires are ~16 and 18.....

what do you recommend?? at his point i can prolly just put the plugs for the S4 in the S5 adapter

whoever has the S5 FSM pease loo and tell me the numbers of the wires with these colors... please
