Speedometer and odometer not working

Don't know why but this morning when I went for a drive my speedometer and odometer decided not to work. It's going to be hard to get under the car the next few days but where should i start? I know the speedometer cable attaches to the end of the transmission, but has anybody had this problem where that connection was the only problem? Thanks.

this is a very simple problem to troubleshoot. there are only 3 parts. the cable, speedometer, and the gear in the transmission. either your cable came unhooked/broke (most likely), the gear in the trans broke, or you speedo is bad.
