is the speedo cable plugged into the tranny and the speedo??

 

Most likely it has something to do with the cable that goes from the transmission to the gauge cluster. It's not that uncommon for them to disconnect at one end or the other. That's the first thing you should look at. Edit: Beaten by 1 min!
