Speedo/odometer just died...(why?)
Speedo/odometer just died...(why?)
It was fine in the morning and when I went home, it was dead. Do I need to get a new speedometer cable? When you take the speedometer cable from the transmission housing, will fluid come out? I'm going to try to fix it myself but I don't know what to really expect. I have the Haynes manual but that isn't too descriptive. TIA.

either the cable broke, or more likly, got disconnected at either where it connects to the tranny, or where it plugs into your gauge cluste. you might want to check that out before you go and buy a new cable
hehehe, it happened to me too
My speedometer cable fell out of my tranny after getting off the highway. Fluid will not come out of the tranny, or at least it didn't on mine, and there should be a little gear on the inside of the hose, make sure it's there and don't lose it, or it will never work. as for the connection near the dash, i have no idea.
You can buy a new speedometer cable if need be from a magazine you can order online (but i forget it know, i'll have my friend post it) for about $20. Or do like i did and take it to your friendly mazda dealership. it would be about $120, and an hour wait, unless you want them to inspect other parts of your car and let them tell you it's bad and they need to fix and charge you more money and they never fix anything in the end, what they do fix might not really need fixing and isn't the problem...

Champagne87, you da woman! Last night I went under my car to check out the cable. Lo and behold the collar had undone itself. I have no idea how the rest of the cable did not fall out, but it didn't. I just screwed the collar back onto the threads and took it out for a test drive. It worked, it really worked! Thanks for the advice.

back to life for this forum......i jsut changed mine and fluid came out. thats transmission fluid right. and it flowed until it stopped or seemed empty but then i looked at the fluid level and it was between min and max.
Hey just yesterday my speedo/odomerter stoped working. I found out my cable fell of my transmission but the wires that plugs inside were missing. The cable plugs up perfectly, but the speedo and odometer stop working. Any little tricks like placing a wire in between to get it to work.?

when you look under your car you cant miss it youll see a cable either dangling or connected to your transmisison all you do is turn the handle and take it off as for the other side you have to take apart your dash to get to it behind the gauge cluster its only 8 screws if i remember correct
THE SPEEDO CABLE AND THE OUTER CABLE ARE A MATCHED SET!! just so you know you have to buy the outer cable and inner cable at the same time it woun't cost any more but will save you much head screaching and greef. don't ask how i know
No it's strictly mechanical.
Fluid doesn't come out if you take it off guys, I don't know what the heck some of you are removing.
It may have come loose off the tranny, hey, 16+ years will do that. Just tighten it. If it still doesn't work, it may have come off the back of the speedo. If you are flexible and skinny you should be able to reach it and snap it back on. You don't even have to see it, you can just feel it. It's a semi-tough reach though.
If it STILL doesn't work, then it snapped somewhere on the inside and you will need a new one.

Kinda like the cable in your weed eater. It is a flexible cable that runs to the back of the instrument cluster from the transmission. As you go faster, the cable spins faster and some magic happens in the speedo that makes the needle read the appropriate speed.

Same thing happened to mine once. Your collar probably came unscrewed and the cable was dangling...right? Well, if thats what happened the cable dragged on the pavement and broke the actuall inner cable and it slipped out of the outer cable (case)....like mine did. Gotta go buy a new one man. Got mine from autozone if I remember right. Easy to replace.

Ok,your speedo cable has little splines on each end. The end in the tranny meshes with a gear inside the tranny which causes the cable to spin and match the rpms the tranny is producing. This in turn causes the end at the dash to spin the speedo needle. Got it?
