speedo cable lubrication
Hello all, I couldn't find any results in the search for lubricating the speedometer cable, so here goes:
About 2 weeks ago, I started hearing a whirring, ticking sound in the dash at highway speeds. A similar sound in my 280ZX preceded the breaking of the speedometer cable in that car. This weekend I finally got the time to get underneath the 7 and take a look, and the cable connection to the tranny was loose and there was fluid around the connection.
This seems to indicate to me that there was some sort of lubrication for the speedo cable that was lost.
Anyone know if the cable draws lubrication from the tranny itself, or will I need to re-lube the cable somehow? or will it require a replacement? Should I attend to the tranny fluid level itself (if so, any tricks on how to fill the tranny?) Am I smoking crack and there is no wet lubrication for the speedo cable?
Thanks much..
edit: clarification

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
If you overfill the tranny, there can be gear oil moved up the speedo cable, (often causing a small oil stain on the speedo gauge on the dash), but I don't believe there is any sort or specification for lubing the cable.
If the cable is bad, just replace it... there are pretty cheap in the scheme of things.

I don't think the tranny feeds the cable, atleast fluid wise. My suggestion is to take the cable out and put a thin film of grease on it. I've done this before and it worked great. Quite as a post apocalyptic world!
