Specific Car Info needed on a 2nd Gen
I need some help on finding out some more specific info on a car I just purchased. Here's the info: This car appears to be a 1986 GXL 5-speed minus the sliding moonroof, it is white in color and has the lightweight flat aluminium hood and what appears to be "OEM white 5 lug wheels" with 4 piston calipers. Also, I can't tell if it was repainted, but the spoiler was white as well. Are all these things common on the RX-7's? Everything about the car seems a little different than some of the other RX-7's I have seen. If you need more details, let me know and I will find out the necessary information. Any help is appreciated.

Specific Details Wanted On A 2nd Gen
I need some help on figuring out more about a car I just purchased. I want to know more about all of the different models, etc. How many different models are there? Is this one I have anything special? It appears to be a 1986 GXL, white in color with a lightweight flat aluminum hood, no moonroof, what appears to be OEM white rims, and a painted white spoiler (I'm not sure if it came factory like this, or was repainted) All your help is appreciated. Please feel free to ask any questions in regards to more details on this car and I will do my best to find the appropriate information so we can figure out some of the specific things on this car.

Quck guess, but I'd say it's the "sport" model, having the 5-lug wheels and no sunroof. Check the sticky at the top of this section to see what models came with what.

I checked out the sticky................and I have come up with that it might be a GXL, but did they come standard with an aluminum hood and white wheels?

Sorry about the double post on the threads...my computer was acting up and it screwed everything up. Can you delete a thread yourself? Once again, I am sorry.

no cars came with stock white wheels except the 88 TII 10th anniversary edition. aluminum hood was only on the sport models IIRC. also i thought gxls all had a moonroof too, but i might be wrong about that.
sounds like you may have a sport body with a gxl transplant. sport had the solid roof and Al hood....

They don't make a GTU in 86' right? The more I think about it, the rim itself is different than the TII's. Plus, my car is an 86'. So maybe the previous owner painted them? The reason I didn't think so is because it had a machine lip on the white rims.
By the way.....what does a 88 T II Anniversary run for? I seen one sitting for over a year in a yard and appears to be in good condition.

Just out of curiousity............would the VIN number classify the difference between the Sport, GXL, etc?
I am beginning to think that maybe my car is a sport now..?????????????????

Ok, we ruled out that it's a GTU. I am now assuming that the rims are painted professionally to have the machined lip.
I am also beginning to think it's a Sport model.............????????????

Just out of curiousity..............was it common for the Sport models with aluminum hoods to have paint peeling problems? On this car, the paint is peeling off the hood.

Does your tittle say 86 or are you looking at the mfg date on the b pillar? If it is tittled as an 87 it would be the sport. Look underneath and see if you have a plastic and metal pan underneath. Only the 87 sport had both.
Picks would help. I don't know of any stock rims that came pianted with a polished lip.
Peeling paint is very common the 7's, especially the hood and roof.

No sunroof suggests that the car is either a base or a sport...
In your case the easiest way to determin would be:
5 lug wheels= sport
4 lug wheels= base
and either way, the white wheels are not stock OEM to that model, and there is no way it heck that it is a GXL as all GXL models came with sunroofs.

The 1986 "sport" package car that I have driven and rode in (never owned one) had a sunroof. Before someone chimes in, let me also add that this was in 1987 that I saw this car, it was original and definitely the sport package.
The baloney slicer wheels, the Al hood and crank windows point to the sport model. But based up what this car looks like it's been through, I really suspect that it's a Franken-seven with perhaps a base body transplant.
Sounds like it has most of the Sports goodies on it, so I wouldn't worry.
