Speakers in 1991 Coupe.

Was going to post in the audio section, but I find no matter where I go on this forum other than the 2nd Gen Specific, everyone talks about FD's. So anyways...

I'd like to know if my sizes are correct since the stock speakers are clearly blown on my car. My car is a 1991 N/A Coupe. 4" in dash, 6.5" in doors and 4" in rear towers? Is that correct? I'd put two 8" sub's in the towers instead of 4" speakers as well. I don't know much about this kind of stuff, so don't mind the absolutely noobish questions coming up... But would I need two mono amps or could I get a 2 channel amp and power both subwoofers?

Also, I've read enough to know that the stock FC alternators are poor, so should I be concerned when I buy 4 new, more power speakers, most likely buy an amp for those, a new deck and 8" subwoofers.

I don't care about how powerful my setup is, I care about the quality of the sound since I basically only listen to metal.

Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: Does my car have the rear floorboard speakers?

dont put 8s in the towers. unless you plan on sealing them up(pain in the ***). just get a 10" in a box, or get creative and put a sub in one cubby, and the amp in the other. And you should be happy with a new deck and decent speakers, shouldnt need to amp them. im running my stock speakers off my alpine deck and an older 10" type R sub in a truck box. gets plenty loud but still sounds great.

I already have a 10" Alpine Type S that I could keep instead of selling. I only use my drivers side compartment to store my hat and glasses, I could do that. Wouldn't the amp or sub get hot in a closed in compartment?

Yeah, I've been through that thread. But none of them are "clean" enough for me. I like the idea of building a box to fit the compartment and then instead of the lid as carpet, sorta have a mesh lid. I'll definitely do that.

Any ideas on the "floorboard" speakers? Where would these be located. Also, are the doors going to be 5 1/4 or 6.5?

I got all these sizes and speaker locations from the FAQ's sticky.

Stock Speakers / Amps
Speaker Size:
Dash: 130mm (4”)
Door: 160mm or 150mm (6”) (note: true 6.5” speakers are 170mm)
Rear tower: 4” or 6"
Headrest: 3.5”
Rear floorboard: 5.25”
Would it be stupid to just buy new speakers for the towers and doors? Leaving the dash speakers stock? (This is a question to anyone)

If you buy new speakers ditch the stock dash speaker. I am fixing to put a system in mine and plan on a set of components in the doors and a 10 inch sub in the drivers storage compartment. Two amps, one for the components one for the sub.

I only have 200 bucks to spend, and the doors are the only ones that sounds completely finished so I don't think I'll replace the dash speakers.

And

I really need to know if the doors are 5 1/4 or 6.5. I'm buying a set of door speakers and tower speakers(gonna go with 6.5 in the towers) tomorrow so I need a reply ASAP!

take your panels off and measure... and with only $200 youre not gonna get much. at least not quality. are you buying a deck too? if so, you will spend that $200 on just a good deck

I'm taking the deck out of my Civic. I forget what the model is exactly, but a year ago when I bought it, it was the top of the line Sony deck. Cost 299.99 (but I got it on sale). The next step up would have been a double-din or touchscreen or w.e.

I'll be buying the speakers off Ebay and I could get some decent speakers for the towers and doors with 200 bucks. I have a cheap set of MTX Thunderdomes or w.e in my Civic and I didn't mind them. They weren't as nice as my Logitech Z5500 computer speakers quality wise. Anything better than stock will do.

I agree on taking a panel off and measuring . If you are getting them tomorrow you will have to take them off anyway to install them. Just leave it off until you install them.

I'm buying them online and I use the car every day, aha. Won't want to drive with a panel off. I'll just measure tomorrow since I've taken the door panel off my Civic before to fix the windows which would fall off the tracks every day. -.-

I'm a very impatient person and if I have the cash on me I'll end up spending it. I also drive the car 60+ kms almost every day and having to listen to the radio on speakers that with the bass slightly on pop and rattle is torture. I'd prefer to get everything done at once. I'll take the door panel off tomorrow and measure then order.

I got me a set of Infinity 4032cf's in the dash and am still in the process of figuring a way to mount the 6032cf's in the rear towers. Just those 4" ones up front really brightened up the music and definitely brought the sound stage farther up front with fade and balance set neutral, it sounds even better slightly faded to the front and still gives a reasonable amount of bass out of the 4" rears. Though, my right rear is starting to pop and crackle, so I'm really wanting to get those rear 6" ones in.

I know what it's like having cash burn a hole in my pocket, but I found both pairs of these speakers brand new on Amazon for the same price as one set on Crutchfield. I highly recommend taking one panel off and measuring before you buy, you wouldn't want to buy some speakers that don't fit. Though, those sizes seem to be accurate so if you follow those I'm sure you'd get the right door sizes, I have an S4 with no doors so I can't comment though.

Also, I am still running the stock amp for my fronts, but I plan on eventually getting a decent 4 channel for everything.

I found a set locally, 4" and 6.5" Kenwoods, lower end 1093 and 1693. But it's all I need. Like I said, anything is better than popped stock speakers! Hopefully he still has them for sale, ad is a little old(June 1st). If the doors aren't 6.5's then I'd just put the 6.5's in the towers and get another set of 5 1/4 for the doors. I also plan on buying an amp eventually and then putting in my 10" Type S in a compartment.

Car audio is ******* expensive!

Took the door panel off, they are 5 1/4's. The speaker is completely destroyed, the whole cloth surround is ripped apart, so it's useless. LOL.

Thanks for all the answers and advice everyone!

barkz, that may be true but, being a college student and having a crap paying job I, personally, don't have money to blow frivolously, seems like I'm living up to the poor 2nd gen owner name haha. And, I'm fine sticking with stock till I save up.

Fixing up the car is not frivolous, unnecessary mods/upgrades when other things need fixed is, so sticking with stock UNTIL I get a better flow of cash is what I make myself do. Great example being my manifold back used RB setup, spent a little under half the price of a new setup, the stock one was all rusted out, falling off, and I was tired of huffing exhaust fumes on my 50 mile round trip to class everyday and sure didn't have the money for a replacement stock 3 cat setup. But, I digress.

Update!

I got my car back, spent $853 on speakers + deck + labor. This is what my car looks like when I get it back:

and here's what pissed me off the most. If you all remember I took my door panel off to check what size the front were and had no problems at all. These guys are supposed to be "professionals" and have a look:

When I picked the car up and paid he said "We ran into a problem, my guys were as careful as they could possibly be when taking the door panels off but one of the interior plastics broke, the one between the panel and window". I was expecting it not to be a big deal, until I got to my car and then got home and took the panel off and found out they tried ******* PRYING the door panel off and snapped the plastic piece and snapped the trim so it doesn't snap in place anymore. And to top it all off, they forgot to screw in one screw for the door panel (lower middle one) and snapped the snap in screw for the rear tower and didn't screw one for the tower in all the way.

His excuse is "well this is an older car". The car was ******* mint, it's got 96,000KMS/60,000 miles and had not ONE issue with the interior. The paint had no scratches along the doors and now all these scratches are there.

They told me to go back so they can see what they can do, but now I'd have to make them pay for new plastic trims and what looks to be an entire new door panel to fix the window sill trim. The paint, we'll fix by polishing/waxing, etc.
