Speaker Mounting Depth

I'm putting 6½ Speakers in a 89' RX GTU. I'm wanting to know if the speaker location in the picture ( location closer to the engine ) has the 3 inches of depth I need, or if I'll have to make door-pods.

As I recall three inches is gonna be tight. Your best bet is just to pull one speaker and get the ol' measure tape out.

You may need to space out the window track or door panel a little in worse case.

Spacers?

I installed 3/4" spacers in my '91, unfortunately it has a slightly different style of door panel.

Yeah, I think it would work with spacers. When I pulled the panel off to install the smaller speaker, there was still some leftover space behind the 6 1/2. Don't the 89+ FC's have a different panel with a hole for door speakers? Mine was just a hole cut into the door panel.

The OEM speaker in the corner had spacers behind it and that speakers had a pretty shallow mounting depth. The good news is the OEM spaker pods on the door panels will fit almost 2" foward - so you can use 1.5-3" spacers behind the speaker without fear.

I fit some Cerwin Vega component 6 1/2" speakers in there by using the 4" metal grates from the rear strut tower speakers as a space/mounting hole. Cut the 4" hole to match the 6 1/2 speaker's hole. Note crutchfield does supply wiring harness adapters for the fronts and rear strut tower 6.5" spacers.

Great bass from the fronts. The oddball 4" under-dash speakers are sold by crutchfield as well (www.crutchfield.com). Get their sweet free catalog if you don't already.
