5K is a little early without a CDI... what are you using for an air filter???

Sounds about right to me. Possibly a bit early, but a lot of people like to replace their plugs every 2nd oil change, which is generally 4k-6k miles.

What kind of driving do you do? Mostly city driving will turn the engine a whole lot more in 5k miles than pure highway driving.

well things that increase plug wear are :
1. The amount of dirt getting into the engine (in otherwords cheapo air filters)
2. detonation
3. high voltage
4. wrong temp plug for the conditions driven

Spark plug wires have nothing to do with spark plug life or performance.
