What number are they?

Should be:

2x BUR9EQ's
2x BUR7EQ's

You can also get them at Mazda..

If there is CSK store near you, then I would suggest checking them out first.

Trailing = lower plugs
Leading = upper plugs

And yes, they're both different.

Any local auto parts store should carry them, such as advanced or NAPA... Thats where I always get mine.

I had to order them from NAPA. While waiting for my order, I went down to Mazda, and they had them in stock for 4 bucks cheaper.

Is that error really in the haynes manual? Wow that is surprising that such a widely used manual has such a critical error that might cause a car to run like crap.

easy way to remember:
trailing=top
leading=lower
T1=top front rotor T2 top rear rotor
L1=lower front rotor L2 lower rear rotor

Yup! I couldn't remember off the top of my head (even though I've changed spark plugs before) so I just took a quick reference in my Haynes manual. I have the 86-91 version and it says on page 54 and I quote, "leading plugs go into the upper spark plug holes and trailing plugs go in the lower hole."

Then I looked up a wiring diagram and saw that I was wrong.

i heard for better power responce you should get all bur9eq's.

is this true? is it that the leading plug makes a bigger spark?or the trailing makes a bigger spark? whats the difference between these plugs?

It comes down to how you drive and engine condition, if you get stuck in traffic then 8 or 7 are fine, if it's all freeway crusing then 9

If your engine is on the older side, then 9 will not last as long especially if you get stuck in traffic.
