spark plugs for a 1988 Gtu

I have a 1988 GTU and im trying to figure out what they mean by lower and upper spark plugs. I bought some ngk plugs from autozone yesterday and I just installed them one at a time. Should I have used upper and lower plugs? Please help

Well, if you look at your engine, you have two sets of plugs. The top plugs are the TRAILING, the bottom are the LEADING (lower=leading, easy to remember). There is a specific plug for each position. The plugs have a T and an L on them to tell you where to put them.
