Unhappy SOS: Transmission... please help!!!

Ok, I bought a used 91 tranny from one of the guys here in the forum and ask him if it is gonna work for 86-88. He told me that it will. Now my car is in the shop and the mechanic told me after they installed it, that the gear is locked in reverse and could not get it out. Can someone please clarify these things. I am totally lost and confused I don't want to spend more money on my car because just the labor is already killing me.

Yep, the tranny will work - my roommate Brian has run every NA tranny on his car .

Before the tranny went in the car, did you put a shifter in it and row it through the gears? Did they mess with anything on the tranny itself - opening inspection plates, playing with sensors, etc?

This is not a common problem, BTW - something's weird.

i don't think they messed with the tranny at all. they just bolted it on and that's it. Could it be my 88 shifter and would not work with 91?

Nope, the shift levers are interchangeable, unless there's something jammed down in the shift housing.

Did you ever try and row the tranny through the gears, like when you first got it?

no because I trusted the guy. I called him up again and he told me that the tranny was working when they pulled it out from his car. he said, he can give me a refund if I want. But I don't want to spend another 250 bucks just to install another tranny on my car.

well, i was just talking to the guy this afternoon and he won't refund the money anymore. my mechanic said that he will have to open the tranny to find out waht's wrong. so that means more money to spend i guess, it will end up rebuilding the tranny.
