Sooo 18psi on a stock turbo?? Hahahah!

So my car went drifting this weekend at a event here in portland,

But anyways. The blow off valve blew off and was re attached. I was driving the car today rather spritied and decided to try a 4th gear pull at my normal 14psi. Well I will be DAMNED if I dint watch that need to right to 18psi and HIGHER if I held it. WTF!!!!!
How do I go from running a perfect 14psi to boosting to god knows how much??

Im going to check everything but, what would cause this? Im still on the TMIC (yes I know, maxes efficency at like 12).

Thanks.

tha max efficiency of 12 psi is on the turbo not the intercooler, pushing that high on a stock turbo is asking to blow your motor....

certain guru's will tell you not to run over 15psi on the stock turbo. not that they won't do it, just that they don't do it for long before something goes. check the boost controller? most straightforward answer is wastegate being funky.

try porting your wastegate if it isn't already done also around 15psi the stock turbo max's out and can blow up your engine

i think it's the turbo that starts falling apart at 15 psi...

a) the seals in the turbo are not meant to hold up to that kind of abuse, my old tired turbo began to smoke after a 15PSI spurt and never quit after that but it did get better.

b) the compressor cannot efficiently produce boost to those levels, after 12-13PSI it just blows hotter air, increasing intake temps and increasing the chance of blowing the engine. i have noticed this on numerous runs while roughly tuning and noted no increase in power past 13PSI.

ill second that on the lack of power gained exponentially horrible... just makes my boost gauge stand on its head thats all..

well us 1st gen guys like to take these turbos, put them on our carb'd 12a's and run a boost line in to the wastegate which usually makes these little hair dryer's hit around 18 - 19psi.... still going strong

i would suspect that his wastegate got stuck somehow, if he has a boost controller i would guess that it also might be the cuplrit because i have never seen a wastegate stick closed unless someone overported the wastegate and the flapper wedged itself into the opening.

if the rod came off then it would flap open and lose boost.

just something to get you thinking. i would check the things i guesstimated first.

you can check the boost controller by omitting it from the system temporarily by installing a solid piece of vacuum line from the compressor outlet to the wastegate actuator such as the stock setup, this will provide unhindered base boost levels.
