Somewhat custom exhaust?

For a long time I've just wanted to get the RB Turboback........ I love the sound, I like that it's dual and has some near stock looking tips on it.... And of course 3" all the way back (yes I know it splits to 2.25" ? at the y-pipe...) is nice too.

But lately with the car having some downtime (afm gone bad) I've been thinking on it more and am unsure I want to do that. Because of course I'd like to somehow cut the cost and also just have a lighter system... So I've been thinking of doing a single one. But lately instead of buying some catback for a large amount (considered the ssac but...ehh....), I've been thinking about just having an exhaust shop make something for me.

I was thinking of getting the RB 3" DP and then having the 16" Borla XR-1 oval muffler.... Then of course some kind of SS pipe that bends to the passenger side and to some other muffler.

I was wondering though how long the pipe would have to be and how much the bend would have to be for it all to fit in the right place? I know it should be SS...

And for the muffler I've been uncertain on what it should be? I remember reading once that dDub had some 4" Magnaflow round mufflers. I also wondered if another XR-1 would be fine... But first of all I just wanted to look through some and make a decision. Mainly I just wanted to ask about the bend length and angle for that one part.

max this can be done very easy and if you are going to make everything then don't bother buying the RB DP.

Everything you need to make your setup can be found at www.ATPturbo.com

The guys can sell you all the mandrel bends you need along with the SS straights and o2 sensor bung.

Also I have tested both Borla Xr-1 and Magnaflow SS and I have to say I like the cheaper magnaflows. If you already have one borla then you do not need to replace it you can buy either or for the back half. I went with a oval in place of the cat and a round on the end like a normal exhaust system.

I made my own 3" stainless exhaust and bought a magnaflow. Magnaflows are pretty nice IMO so id go with that. I bought some OBX muffler.. $99 ebay special. Anywys.. its not rocket science to make up ur own exhaust if you have a welder n such. ull just need some 90 degree bends, flanges, gaskets, hangar rod and a 02 bung. However if you gonna buy the RB downpipe then your only goin to need about 5'.. maybe 6' pipe to finish the cat-back. i used 5' of pipe and 1 and a half mandrel 90's to finish my catback(of coarse few hangars too). here a vid of what my exhaust sounds like with magnaflow and OBX cheapie muffler.. hope it works..

Ok, thanks.

I actually dont' have the borla yet, was going to get everything at once. I really liked the sound of it. From dDub's video of when he put in a borla xr1 before his ebay cans. Made it real deep sounding and all. How much is the Magnaflow SS you mention? I can get the XR-1 for around $130... So... If it's cheaper than that and produces a similar result to the XR-1.... Nice

That magnaflow doesn't sound too bad... Seems like the clip of dDub's xr-1 was much more deep though. But you both said you like the sound of those better... maybe the camera? Or the angle? Hrm.

edit:
Or even the muffler, I dunno. Thought I should add this, I thought it but didn't say it for some reason...

I was just looking at ebay, and found that some shop is selling Magnaflow 3" SS mufflers for $73 shipped. I think I'll be adding one inline soon.

Well with my stock exhaust needing to be replaced now (cats are clogged BAD) I had just thought of doing SSAC and changing that over time. But I've rethought it and ponder this again....

I hate to say it but I've no clue what in the world to do for putting an exhaust together from ATPturbo. I'd like to do that since it seems it'd be cheap and nice.... but.. I've no idea about dimensions for length and where they'd bend.... I know the mufflers I'd want to use but that's about it.... Is there anyone that can help / suggest the pieces that would be required?

Thanks...

Having looked through a few things I've not really found a lot of help.. I found bukwild talking about his 4" system he made for his vert... He said it had 3 45 degree mandrel bends and "a few 3 degree chop cuts." Not so sure what that last part is.....

Though what I still don't really know anything on is length of things? Such as from the DP.... how far back... etc. I'm thinking of putting an XR1 in the middle of the car and maybe using another XR1 as the exit muffler even.

Can anyone give any input on this to help me out though?

Thanks..

max is this for a stock t2 turbo? If so here is a picture of my old 3 inch down pipe setup for the stock turbo.
to build the DP
You are going to need 1 o2 sensor bung (www.jegs.com) 2 90 degree SS mandrel bends and 2 feet of SS straight pipe ( www.ATPturbo.com)that will connect into what ever you are using for a mide pipe (XR-1 or Magnaflow). You will also need a 2.5 to 3 inch adapter(www.atpturbo.com) and a turbo flange from www.racingbeat.com) to mate up to you turbo back side.

Now the catback.

Then after the mid pipe you will need 2 3 inch exhaust flanges (www.jegs.com) 1 45 degree mandrel bend & 4 feet of straight(www.atpturbo.com) and a few chop angle cuts. These are just what they sound like. You take a chop saw and make your slight cuts in 3 or 5 degree to angle the exhaust straight back to whatever rear exhaust pipe (XR-1 or Magnaflow) you want and exit out.
This is not as hard as it sounds. If you have the supplies then any backyard welder can fab up this exhaust in a few hours.

Thanks, was wondering if anyone was going to reply. I had thought of PMing you to ask since I'd seen the thing about yours hehe.

Well.... Mostly stock T2, yeah.

So the 3-5 degree angle is cut at both ends just to get it over there and keep it straight? Ok. Not sure what was confusing to me last night, I wasn't that tired.... 4 feet after the XR-1 in the middle seems pretty long though? Then again I don't remember lengths and proportions in relation to other things in my mind very well....

And yeah, I was going to use the XR-1 for an exit too.

yeah using the 2 borla xr-1's will give you a real nice deep sounding exhaust.

And if I remember right I used almost a 4 foot stick to finish it up. Here is a pic of how straight you can actually make it.

I am not real sure why some of the exhaust companies that make exhausts for our cars put some many unnecessary bends and large degree turns.

And I had no problems getting the 4 inch stuff under the car. My exhaust actually fits closer to the body then my previous corksport did. Plenty of room for a 5 or 6 inch DP if someone wanted a serious spool monster.
