Sometimes wont start

Well I took in my 87 GXL N/A to the shop over the weekend to get my front wheel bearings fixed up and when i went to pick it up (The shop was closed) the battery was completely dead. The door lights didnt even go on when i opened the door.

I called my buddy and he came and gave me a boost. It took a long time to get er going but it finally started. I let the battery recharge and what not and drove around for about 30 minutes. I went home and turned off the car and let it sit for about 5 minutes and tried turining it back on. It would not start again but this time the engine was cranking but that was it. So it was boosted again! I noticed when driving around the voltage meter on my dash was reading 12-13 volts (I thought i read that it should be 14 somewhere. correct me if im wrong).

So the next day went all fine and it started everytime but the day after i couldnt get it started again and boosting it wouldnt work this time so i had to push start it.

I read over numerous threads and I think the problem might either be the Battery is a P.O.S, possibly the ground wire has a bad connection or what not, or my alternator is going down hill. Does anyone have any ideas to add to this situation or direct me to a place to find out?

Alternator is dying. You should get atleast 14v out of it. As for the not starting good thing. Might be TPS problem, flooding and/or bad compression.
