Someone just made an offer on my RX7 GTUs - fair deal?
So this dealer just made an offer on my 1989 RX-7 GTUs for $3000.
The GTUs is a pretty special rare edition of the GTU in that it's designed for track duty in that it's extremely light weight and setup more aggressively and includes some sort of special VLSD .
Here are some photos of the car from the previous owner.
http://sccaforums.com/photos/jamesws.../original.aspx
The big points about the car is that it's a winning car in SCCA, I think it's won a bunch of stuff in 06 from the previous owner. It's got:
Odyssey PC545 11lb battery
New Radiator, belts, hoses, clamps, etc.
Mazda Competition engine/trans/diff mounts
it's got a newly rebuilt by Mazda transmission
new kyb adjustable shocks
new control arms
custom dyno tuned exhaust
new mazda competition bushings
new Eibach roll bars
great Kosei K1 light weight wheels
Hawk racing pads
Engine: Series 5 13B, high compression 6-port engine, lightest NA
rotors, fresh rebuild.
What's bad is that the paint is really in poor shape due to the sponsor decals being stripped off, I recently broke the antenna, the radio's lights don't work, and the driver's side seat is not in good shape as well as the arm rest and the shifter bushing, the wiper motor is also intermittently failing. The pilot bearing or something like that needs replacing too.
I basically bought this as only a track car and auto-x car. However, since then circumstances have changed in terms of my work schedule and I won't be able to change my work schedule for at least a year.
Anyways, the offer is at $3000 from a dealer and my buying price was $5000.
I need to get a station car, as in a car that'll get me from the train station to work 3 days a week and I feel like maybe I'll just eat the 2k and sell it for now. What do you guys think? Should I hold on to this car since it's pretty rare or just get rid of it at this point in my life and get a track car later when my schedule frees up.

What I mean is why is a dealer offering to buy a track car? I would say thats a pretty good deal for that car. Its really not worth its full value as a GTUs anymore because of the modifications.

I don't know, I asked a mechanic friend who specializes in RX7s to see if anyone wants to possibly buy it.
Here's the original post selling that car, some of the items listed like the Bilstein shocks and steering wheel are not on the car.

My wife and I agreed months ago that if gas locally reached $3.25/gal,
the RX-7 would have to go. So here we are!

The GTUs was a special Competition configuration, with estimated
production option packages of 100-1000 cars during its two-year run.
Grassroots Motorsports did an excellent article June 2004...."A
notable exception is the GTUs. Although very few were built, Mark
Shuler of Tri-Point feels that this would be the ultimate non-turbo
second-generation car to own thanks to its light weight, Turbo-spec
chassis and later high-compression engine."
"Major changes came in 1989 with the introduction of another new model
and some technical changes. The GTU became the base model, while the
new GTUs became essentially a Turbo version without the turbocharger.
This no-nonsense machine had the suspension and all the performance
goodies without all the luxuries that added weight. It even had a
4.30:1 rear end (and VLSD) (a 4.10:1 unit was standard). Other than
us, however, apparently not many people thought this model was a cool
idea, as only about 100 were built" - GRM June 2004, Tim Studdard.
Keith Casey won the San Diego National Tour this year in the car.
I won the ProSolo at Fontana the following weekend.
Car: 1989 Mazda RX-7 GTUs, Red, regarded as the BEST N/A RX-7 ever,
less than 1000 built.
Chassis Mileage: 183K
Engine mileage : <3K on Solo Stock rebuild, all Mazda parts, very
reputable rotary shop in SoCal.
Engine: Series 5 13B, high compression 6-port engine, lightest NA
rotors, fresh rebuild.
I have Engine Oil Analysis from before the rebuild AND all oil changes
after the rebuild as well.
HKS CARB-legal intake system
Split Second Programmable Signal Calibrator (think
fully-laptop-programmable SAFC)
Custom ST-legal header, cats (4/21/06), custom 2.5" exhause
single-exit, Supertrapp removable tip
Fresh NGK plugs and wires, coilpacks, engine grounds.
Mazda Competition underdrive main pulley and alternator pulley
Odyssey PC545 11lb battery
New Radiator, belts, hoses, clamps, etc.
Mazda Competition engine/trans/diff mounts
Rebuilt GTUs trans with stock race 5th gear, 4.3:1 with new Mazda VLSD.
RedLine MT-90 and 75w-90.
Hawk HP+ pads in stock magnesium 4-pistion calipers
SS brake lines, Motul RBF600
Cuzco camber plates
AWR custom lighweight rigid upper strut tower brace
Mazdaspeed front lower strut brace
AWR custom strut housings, Bilstein Motorsports Porsche monotube
inserts, coilover
AWR rear upper mounts, Bilstein Motorsports monotube coilover shocks
(Porsche 914-6)
Eibach 28mm front sway bar and hardware (stock GTUs bars available),
adustable rear bar (NIB).
Custom rear upper strut tower brace (most aftermarket pieces are junk,
so we made our own)
Energy Suspension urethane bushings throughout
Mazda Competition DTSS eliminator delrin bushings
(4) Stock 16x7" +40mm offset GTUs/TII wheels
(4) 16x7.5" Kosei K1 race wheels +43mm, 225/45-16 Hankook RS-2 Z212 tires
(2) 225/45-16 Hankooks unmounted and unused, full-tread
ARP 3" studs, wheel bearings.
Sparco Mod383 steering wheel and hub
All stock interior including lighweight GTUs seats and uber-rare 2+2
rear seats (may delete as option)
Stock functional radio and upgraded speakers
Factory aluminum hood and control arms.
No sunroof
No A/C
Crank windows
No hatch wiper (or hole/plug, just solid glass)
Black interior in excellent clean shape
2470lbs with stock seats and 2+2 seats (option-delete to remove), most
other RX-7's especially the Series 5 ('89+) weigh 2800-3200lbs.
Retail costs to duplicate just in parts is around $6360.00 and a good
rebuilt engine would be between $3500.00 and $7000.00. A stripped
GTUs chassis sold in SoCal for $2800.00 last year, I have seen crazier
things.
We are (at this time) looking for a good reliable fuel-efficient
replacement that can be occasionally autocrossed....we have a rally
car, a time trial/BMWCCA car, and two road race cars with possibly
another on the way, so I don't need another crazy Nationals car. We
also need deposit $$ for moving into another apartment, so
two-birds-with-one-stone would be great.
Will TRADE for clean non-MINI H-Stock or G-Stock cars.....'89 Civic
Si, Mazda MX-6 (V6), E36 BMW 318is, SE-R,/NX-2000, '90-'99 Integra,
CRX Si.....possibly an E-Stock Miata or Porsche 944. Need not to be
built for Solo Stock, clean unmodified cars will be considered.
Asking price is $6500.00
jamesnwilson@hotmail.com
I will be competing in the car at most/all of the Western Tours and
Pros, including Atwater Tour and Pro this next two weekends, at least
until the car is gone. Chris Hartman is codriving the Atwater
Tour....
Thanks!

You'd have to do an assload of work to get a stock car to that level of tuning, so I'd say no, unless you don't like it...
You'd be better off selling the tuning parts, putting stock ones on, and THEN selling it.

yup i sold my 89 GTUs for 4500 damn i wish i never did tho. the real question is is it worth 3000 or 3500 to you? its only worth what sumone is willing to pay for it. i must say it is a pretty rear car. i have not found another its been about almost 3 years

dont do it. unless you want to trade for an almost completly stock base model 87. gets 330miles per tank. thats 23mpg with a 14 gallon tank. i would love that car lol.
if you say no to my car, then i would not sell it. you will regret it.

I have an 89 GTUs and its not nearly in as good condition as yours, and theres no way id sell it for $3000. With paint and some minor work I can get 4k easily. Hell you bought yours for $5k, you can get that back, just wait it out and be patient.

i would hang on to it. the problems you mentioned are fixable w/ a little time and money. swap out the worn seats for racing seats. get new paint job then go to town on the other problems and quirks. i paid $4500 for my 90 gxl. teh only reason i paid that much was less then 1k miles on rebuild and bone stock condition. this is a nice car that i wouldn't sell for that price. but everyone has a limit and it depends on how bad u need the $
